Admin, We need to start a black list for MUA

    Advertisements

    Here's a common story:
-MUA housing department will do there best to put you up in local housing, think this isn't a problem? Well think again before choosing to get your housing from them. Being affiliated with the school doesn't necessarily mean you are a great landlord. Some are, but most aren't.
If you choose to leave and move somewhere else, for reasons of safety, cleanliness, more quiet location, or better amenities you can find yourself in a terrible situation.
I signed a contract with my previous land lord which clearly states I'm to receive my damage deposit back, $1500US is a lot of money. I moved out and asked for my damage deposit back. After three months of waiting, Landlord and the person who runs the MUA student housing fabricated a story about how my wife and I wrecked his place. (what they don't realize is that my pictures of the apartment and all of our friends that we had over to visit will say otherwise, but this does not matter).

The rent in this place included the use of a 20 year old car. If you can imagine what a 20 year old island car looks like you will know what kind of shape it was in, eps from never being garaged and always exposed to the salt air. He's suing me for repainting the vehicle!!!

I'm now accused of wrecking his place (how does one wreck floor tile anyways?) but the truth of the matter is that he wants me to pay for his renovations because 4 of the floor tiles were not installed correctly and had buckled over the past 20 years.
I contacted a lawyer and tried to go through 'logical' and proper channels but that was a waste of time, you can't reason with those who are dishonest.
You sign a contract that holds no merit in any legal arena. In this country, the law of this land is based on verbal agreements. So kiss your Canadian/American rights goodbye!!!

MUA housing WILL not support the students in any way. There is quite a scam going on here, when MUA housing places you with someone they get a kickback. The person running the MUA housing is making thousands of dollars under the table. My ex landlord said his fee was 300$/month.
Another med student has a story where his landlord wants him to pay for an A/C unit that never did work but now somehow is this students fault, same student got a bill for repairing and replacing old clogged plumbing! Or how about having to pay for furniture because you sat on it too long?

Why do these landlords and MUA housing think that they can get away with this? Because they can and we can do nothing about it!

Like in my case and so many of you whom I've talked with that have had similar experiences with the housing dept, we need to come forward with our stories so that new students can be better informed about what to expect. Don't be so naive when you all arrive.
This is a great school, with great students, and there are great places to stay with excellent landlords but....

MUA housing gives the university a big black eye.

There is a 'black list' that is only accessible to students that log into the student share, no one uses it because it doesn't get the proper exposure it rightly deserves.

There needs to be a better way to deal with our complaints and island issues rather than resorting to a forum such as this.

I'm not a lawyer and especially not familiar with the local regulations on Nevis, but if the "proper channels" aren't working for you perhaps you could take out a full-page advertisement in the local newspaper telling everyone what happened? Or maybe there's a Better Business Bureau office on the island that you could report this to? Just make sure that you document everything that happens. Save all of your receipts and pictures. Get affidavits from your friends while their memory is fairly fresh... I'm sure your lawyer is on the ball, however.

Sorry to hear this happened to you. At least you can warn current and future students the troubles you experienced.

Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

I am with you. The people who run housing there are complete scam artists. Charlene Huggins and "Claxton" are the very pits of society.

I also want to mention that since moving out of this place, the landlord thinks that I should have stayed there for my full 20 months. I stayed for 5. He's suing for the remaining 15months X 1500$ = $22,500US!!!!! His argument is that by me leaving I'm interfering with his business!! What about the 30day notice?
Have you ever heard of anything so ridiculous?
I contacted Charlene about this and she conveniently recalls her conversation with the landlord but does not recall anything that she and I talked about (this occurred almost 10 months ago and her memory is selectively sharp). It seems that if your a local and you are not happy with your contract, or you need to get some renovations done, a fabricated verbal agreement will suffice.

My intention here is to see that students are properly represented on this island. All we want is to be treated fairly. It gives me no pleasure to be on a forum when I should be studying.

This is a great school. We've got great professors and a great student body.

There is no BBB on the island.
A article in the paper sounds like a great idea.

I would be really surprised if "admin" did anything about this.

I suggest taking this issue with student government. I know that this is also a longshot as students are not at all unionized on this campus. I find it heart breaking how students are being taken advantaged of not only via this housing coordinator but also via other channels. Both related and non related to the university, i.e., LOCALS!!!

The most reasonable solution is to take time and try to unionize the student body. I would recommend to simply start a Concerned Students Union/Club. Simply pick a date and time and hand out flyers. Tons of students are fed up with the lack of concern that the university has on its sole source of income and stability. With recent events like the Diwali (sp?), housing coordinator Ms.H., robberies, high failing rate, failure to publicly display step scores/ failure rates, denial to publish class surveys, incompetent employees, (not so much the professor, we are lucky to have most of these), lies and more LIES regarding california approval status, etc. and etc.

If it really matters to you, then do something about it. I feel that most of us, like myself, have lost touch with the flame to make a difference. I'm tired of the lies and being taken advantage of... but above all, I just want to get the hell out! So, unless you really want to do something about it, follow the MUA motto.

get in, get done, get out!

    Housing at MUA

6 years later.. and this women is still getting away with the same **. 2 students had issues with mold and a terrible money scamming landlord and Charlene did not do a thing about it. Instead, she reassured that no one has ever not recieved their money back when being evicted (wrongfully evicted at that) just to force me to move out and keep my pre-paid rent. The landlord is her relative.. and 4 students have had the same issues and it will continue to happen to incoming students because as much as I have complained about the issue, nothing gets done. The frustration, and time taken away from school is ridiculous.

How did this all resolve itself? I am in med 4 and quickly approaching the end of my time on the island. Would love to hear how it all worked out for you!
