    Word limit on PS

    Advertisements

Hey guys. Just wondering how strict the 500 recommended word limit is for the PS when applying. Mine is 900 words, should I cut it down some more?

That is almost twice what they asked for....I would cut it down because one they may think you can not follow instructions and two they are probably not going to read the whole thing. Have a professor or mentor read it and cut it down; that is what I did. I was able to get under 500 with a great essay and I was admitted.

if they say 500 words, stick to 500 words. if they are reading a stack of these and your's sticks out for being much longer it will likely been seen negatively despite additional content.

Either cut the least important things out or reword it to reduce the number words. if there are things on your personal statement they want more information on, they will ask you during the interview.

I think it will be fine

Ok, I honestly think going over 500, like to 900 will be fine. MUA isn't going to dismiss just for that. But if you are going to use 900 make sure the info is relevant and not a waste of space and time for them to read. Intrigue them with what you need and want to tell them and 900 shouldn't be a problem. Mine was about 750 and I still got admitted. I was actually complimented on mine. Say what you need to say but don't waste their time with fluff.

Thanks guys. One more question. MUA has those 3 things that they really want answered while other medical schools like AUA are more general in the information they want.

Question is, should I just make the MUA application relevant to those 3 quesitons and leave out most other stuff (this would make it kind of boring to read, but with 500 word limit this might be what they recommend?). Or, should I keep it personal, interesting, and address their points along with other information I think is relevant and have it closer to 900 words?

Thanks a lot for the input guys, let me know what you guys did with your personal statements

if you have the option to start in may it may be good idea becuase it gives you time after basic sciences to take some extra time for step 1 if you need it. also, you won't be stressed for finishing step 2 in time.

if you start september and you are delayed for any reason, you actually lose an entire year because residencies only start at one time, regarless on when you finish medical school.
