    LGBT Community at MUA?

    Advertisements

I've applied to MUA for Jan 2010. Just wondering if there are any homosexuals at the school?

Yes, there are gays and lesbians at MUA. I don't know about any transgendered persons though. However, while homosexuality isn't technically illegal, some homosexual acts are. the "sodomy" laws are on the books in the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, as well as many other Caribbean countries. I guess that makes us lesbians safe .

If you are interested there is a UNHCR report on it at:

UNHCR | Refworld | Saint Kitts and Nevis: The situation of homosexuals; state protection and availability of support groups

The stigma against homosexuality in the Caribbean, including Nevis, is considered a major barrier in the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS in the region. The laws prevent potential high-risk people from seeking testing and counseling services and, of course if they don't get tested, they don't get treatment.

There have been several attempts to do some HIV/AIDS-related research in Nevis by MUA, but it has been opposed by the government. It's a bit moot point now anyway, as the epidemiology professor who was trying to do the research was just "let go."

The school has never, to my knowledge, discriminated towards LGBTs, and I have never heard of any incident where LGBTs were harassed by Nevisians, but as long as I've been here there have been no open displays that might bring such harassment.
