Some current Med5 s got caught cheating allegedly

    Advertisements

Some current Med 5 students were allegedly caught cheating on a pathology laboratory exam. Will administration take appropriate action this time? My sources tell me that the suspects were forced to take the exam again last week. I hope administration has their cheating policy well sorted out by the time I get to med5.

    cheating

The situation was addressed by adminstration, the faculty involved and the discipline committee. It was decided that a retest was the best course of action. Cheating is taken seriously at MUA and will always be addressed. Some students will always disagree about how a cheating situation is handled. The point is that MUA did handle it. I am the faculty involved. If you have any other questions Naive to Cynic please come see me.

Do you not have a policy which calls for the dismissal of students who cheat? Seems like these students got off easy. At a minimum, they should have received a zero on the exam.

    end of story

I am the faculty involved in the latest cheating incident and I am also chair of the discipline committee.

There is an algorithm that MUA follows when the honor code is violated. The incident is presented to the dean. The dean has 2 choices. The dean can make a decision upon the matter or refer it to the discipline committee. This time the dean did not refer it to the discipline committee in part because I asked him not to, as the chair of discipline committee. The discipline committee was made aware of the situation and no objection to the non-referral was put forth.

At this point, the dean can make a decision about what do about the incident. He did.

Any student can have whatever opinion they want on the matter. MUA has a policy in place. It was followed. End of story.

The teacher accidentally forgot the exams in the room after the exam, then posted the answer key outside the door. Most people didn't see or hear of anyone doing anything. The only thing I heard was that someone changed a few answers because they misnumbered them. The test was very easy, so I don't think many people would actually try to cheat.

Apparently a student went and told the teachers that there was cheating, but there was no hardcore evidence of anything, so the teacher indicated that anyone who had crossed out anything and written in a new answer had to rewrite, or lose the points for those answers. This includes people who just merely crossed out an answer during the test. As far as I know, only one person rewrote, the rest just lost a point or 2 because it was only for bonus points.

MED5's Get Caught Cheating on Pathology Lab Exam

Some students were caught cheating on a pathology lab exam. Now the administration was told about the incident. It could go to the discipline committee or the dean has the ability to handle the situation as he would like. They handled the situation, but i do not agree with there decision. Instead of giving them a zero or putting them on probation. They decided to let the student or students retake the lab exam. The problem with that is MUA is trying to clean up all of the cheating that goes on here. But by not sending a message that there is a zero tolerance for cheating, it will only continue. It would have been nice to see a harsher decision. The cheating will never stop until the school takes serious action and discipline against the people who cheat. It is just like the kaplan post test given last semester. They had two hard copies of the kaplan post test that was given to them. Nothing was done about that matter as well. It would have been nice to see all the students have to retake the post test. My point is, MUA has to come down harder on students cheating or it will never stop.

    No names...

We were not given any names or real specifics... But here's what allegedly happened:

We had an extra-credit Microscopic lab exam, we went in groups of 10 and apparently after the last group the exam sheets got accidentaly left on a desk in the classroom. This is the same classrooom that we have Kaplan in later in the day. According to an annonomous source some students were looking at there exams and possibly changed some answers. Any one that had eraser marks on their paper was supposed to have to retake the exam or lose the points for the erased answer, regardless of when the erasing took place.

It was really stupid, 1. it was extra credit. 2. No one should have missed more than 2 or 3 max, most people got 100% 3. Whoever came forward and accused other students of changing their answers should have been specific with names so that the whole class wasn't implicated. The whole deal was fairly suspicious, So the school did what they could to make sure that if someone had "changed their answer after the test" then justice would be somewhat served...

Bottom line: Regardless of whether anyone actually changed their answers or not. DON'T CHEAT ever, but NEVER, EVER, EVER CHEAT ON EXTRA CREDIT. Thats just dumb...

    not enough specifics

There were not enough specifics to implicate any one specifically, and it was partially the faculty's fault for leaving exams just laying around in an open classroom. Read the other Thread about this... It is all laid out there.

All the cheaters getting passed through is probably why the USMLE pass rate is low.....the sad reality is though, it happens at all schools, even in the states. Cheaters only hurt themselves, but the school has a tendency of letting this slide. I remember a couple of semesters back, someone stole the physio exam, and the cheater was caught, after an intense interrogation process done by the administration, but he was around the semster after, so i dont know what happened with that situation. I do know that the school takes cheating very serious, and accusations of cheating are very serious too. So everyone needs to relax and worry about their exams

folks please look to see if a topic has been posted already before starting a new one. It creates more work for everyone and usually results in wails of conspiracy when the thread started can't find their subsequently merged thread.
