    Hot Crowded Classrooms

    Advertisements

Just wanted to warn anyone considering MUA that the air conditioning in the classrooms is frequently out of service. I am currently in Med 4, and the AC in our classroom has been broken most of the semester, and it gets dangerously HOT, to the point that I have become physically ill on several occasions. Adding to the discomfort is the fact that we sit literally 6 inches from each other (I measured today.) This is really enjoyable on the days we have PD lab, when we have to wear long sleeves and tie!

Every time I have reported the problem, they send one of the two local “maintenance men” in (local guys who know nothing about AC)… they mess with a few buttons on the remote and end up saying there is nothing they can do. The school refuses to bring in qualified repair personnel to properly fix the air conditioning.

This situation is not unique to the Med 4 classroom, the same thing goes on in all the classrooms. In fact, the only comfortable building on the whole campus is the admin building where the Dean’s office is, go figure.

And remember, attendance is mandatory; in some classes you can only miss 7 days a semester – regardless if you are dripping sweat in an unairconditioned room. Who can really concentrate in these conditions?
We keep hearing, “just wait for the new building.” Well, that could still be months and months away. How about fixing the infrastructure that is already in place, and being considerate of the student’s health and comfort.

I can tolerate all of the other problems at MUA, but sitting in a stifling hot and sticky classroom for 6 hours a day is too much!

If you are dead set on the Caribbean, consider a school that is respectful enough of their students to keep them comfortable.

    Air Conditioning

Yes the Med 4 a/c went out today. It has been out before this semester BUT not most of the semester. The maintenance man is knowledgable about a/c and we have brought in local companies as well. We have a/c's, and condensors in storage to replace the one that broke today. I will see to it that it is attended to first thing in the AM. The new building will be ready in May and yes that will take care of the problem. The new building is a state of the art 40,000 square foot building with all the latest AV equipment and we are working on elmo's and audience response. I am sorry that the A/C went out but I must point out the A/C was out in my office several days last week. It happens. It will be attended to promptly and as soon as the new jewell of a building is opened this will be a thing of the past. Fortunately we have back-up's to replace any parts or the whole thing if need be. I just spoke to the maintenance people and they say it was "iced" up. They will be in early before class to work on it. Not sure what else I can do but if you have a specific request PLEASE PM me. By the way classes are mandatory as a result of regulatory requirements by states and accrediting bodies. Thanks for your post. It was constructive. Dean T

    Ac

They fixed the AC in that room like 4 times last semester. I'm pretty sure the units are just not built to cool off a room that size in the sun all morning with 98 students breathing hot air, and 98 more computers putting out heat all day. It usually freezes up about the time Med 4 classes start and unless you turn it off for like 2 hours to let it thaw out, then it won't work for the rest of the day. But when they recharge it with freon it usually seems to do the trick for at least a few days... So if Dr. T has somebody on it then it should work tomorrow. In the mean time you can always go stick your head in the pool like I've done a time or two or go buy some slightly overpriced Ice-Cream from the caf.

    Congrats bro!!

I actually found the school facilities to be better than i expected. We have the largest class size(96?) and the air conditioner didnt break down the whole semester till today.Mind you there is still one working(there are two bbig units in the class) so i didnt feel it was that hot.
Its usually windy/cool outside anyways, with passing showers,so i dont think it gets that hot.

Im sure the admit is trying to get it fixed asap.

Med 4 not Med 1 have no A/C at times

    UPDATE...hot off the Newspress.

115pm today 15 min into PD: 1 A/C dies ...10 seconds later the other dies...for 45 min we sweat until we transfer over to Med 3 by Pharm time...245pm Dr Akbar asks .."Why so hot in here Eh!" ...class answers "No A/C here either bro" ...aah..The life of a Med 4...musical chairs.

On a more serious note: ...lets hope we have a cold class by exam time Fri afternoon...

BTW regarding the few people that are cold WHEN the A/C works ...bring a sweater....at least you can warm up ..how can us ordinary folk cool down if there is no A/C...its not like we can strip down and sit there naked EH!
