    Cell Phones/Phone Service

    Advertisements

Just wondering what most people do for phones/cell phones on Nevis. I know the school recommends that you get a Vonage account- is that what most people do? Is there a cell phone provider that works on the island? Which one(s)? How much does it cost?

    Thanks!

    Cell phone providers:
Digicell and Cable and Wireless. Usually they give you the phones free for new students during orientation, if you miss it, i think they sell them for about 100EC each roughly at the store.

Most people have vonage or other VoIP phones as well. Skype is another option

For locals calls I have a digicel cell phone and for calling back home I have a vonage like service.

calling back home is really expensive if you don't have an internet phone like vonage. you also really need to have a local cell phone; I got mine free at orientation. Because it is pay as you go, it is inexpensive to get one if you miss the promotion (it can get expensive if you want an expensive phone, the nokia they give you works great).

I got one of the free phones that the phone company gives away at school for local calls and for long distance to the U.S. I use yahoo messenger where I pay 1-2 cents per minute.

    Skype

Skype is another really good option for calling home. Its like 1 or 2 cents per minute to call to the states and there is no contract.

I have this thing called Magicjack (magicjack.com), and it has been pretty good 95% of the time. It's similar to vonage in that you get your own number, call North America for a flat fee, and can use a regular cordless phone, EXCEPT that it plugs into your USB, so it is functional when your computer is on. It only works with Windows at the moment. Upside though, is that it is a fraction of the cost of any vonage-like service, at $40 for the first year and $20 for following years.
