    MUA vs USE

    Advertisements

I am sure someone had already answered this questions many times but I ran a search but could not find anything.
Here is my situation: I ve got accepted to both MUA and USE. I was thinking MUA because I believe with their affiliation with SABA, they may have higher administration and better relation with hospitals etc... However, I am not too satisfied with their financial aids package. they only have one loan provider. They don't seem to walk the student through the loan process at all and it feels to me that may not care to much about the students. ( financial aids office)
I only saw about 15 sites for clinicals.

USE may have a smaller administration, maybe behind in technology. I have the sense that they may care about students a little more. However, I have not seen any picture of USE and don't really know what the classes are like or better yet, the whole town. they have have 2 loan providers which makes it a bit easier. they have scholarships and running a little cheaper. however, I don't know anything about their USMLE scores. I am not familiar with their education level too much.

If someone could enlight me with some more information, I would really appreciate it as I am running out of time to make a decision for May. I am still waiting for Ross but I may not even attend them. I only want Ross for their Financial aids package.

Statia has their 5th semester in Illinois, which started recently, and they have their exams on computers (MUA has said starting my first semester here (which was January 2007) that there will be computerized exams soon, but it doesn't look like the building will be done anytime soon). A friend told me that Statia also has their curriculum posted on servers students can access. MUA's lectures still need to be copied via thumb drive from the desktop computer in the classroom, and then passed around.

MUA has been approved for more than 12 weeks of clerkship there, as well as qualification for applying for residency there. Statia doesn't have that. However, there have been [unverified] rumors that our "renewal' visit with New York didn't go so well.

MUA's admissions office told me that the USMLE first time pass rate was 85%. I thought this was true until last semester, a dean (who is now no longer with the school), told students that the pass rate was significantly lower, and the dean has been saying that the school is taking measures to up our scores to the 85% mark. I mention this so that you are not blindly drawn here by the misinformation that the admissions office may give you.

Most of the professors here are very good human beings, in my opinion. Some are very good teachers.

The school also claims to have a small student to teacher ratio. This is definitely not true. Class sizes are near 100, and at least one particular teacher has expressed their concern over the large class size, and not being able to allow adequate access, and is working overtime on her own to allow access.

Clinical sites are now pretty uncertain. The list posted at the library is from 2006, and no updated list has surfaced since then. The administration constantly says that they are working on new hospital rotations, yet none are announced. If they have indeed successfully negotiated new clerkship sites, I'd really like to see it announced or posted somewhere prominent.

Just an aside: anyone know of the status of the NYC area rotations after SGU's "contract" with the city hospitals for exclusive access to rotation spots?

I apologize for such a late reply, but last week was our block exams and we just got back from our reading break (4 day weekend) so in answering your questions, not sure if i have too many answers to offer in that department, but yes, Statia does definitely care more about thier students. Not to say that MUA doesn't, they do, its just MUA is rather more "do or don't do" and statia is more.....do, we'll try help you, okay sorry". In terms of USMLE scores.....i do not want to manufacture numbers so you'd have to call the schools for that. The island of Nevis is a bit more developed but you HAVE to have a car...the island is more spread out...statia you can get away with walking to classes. Both islands have all that you would need to live on. Statia does offer 2 loan providers (Teri & Dr.'s Choice) while MUA only offers Terri (They just lost their second choice - Health Xpress last semester). Dont know if that helps you at all with your choosing, feel free to ask any other questions. I've been going back and forth from Statia to Nevis several times the past couple of semesters. Good luck with your decision!

Well coming up in weeks to follow I am heading out USE to check it out after our block exams.....I plan to arrive on a Friday mid day and check out some classes, talk with students, talk the admins and see how it is overall on the island. I will compare food (Ive been on nevis for over a year) and grocery prices along with maybe look at the inside of some houses to compare to.....Obviously I cannot in two days def know how well the school prepares you....but I guess I give you my first impression along with a year of knowledge of MUA......full report by March 17th or so....

    Thank you

You guys, I am very grateful for your answers. I am kinda leaning on USE a bit more than MUA. I did some research and I know the two islands are more or less similar. I have to send my deposit by the middle of the month so I will see what happens. again I thanks a lot

    Holland

Possible that I am wrong but I have heard that now that Stasia is a protectorate of Holland and Saint Martin is sovereign that the school will need to go through a rigorous accreditation by Holland officials. Will it pass? MUA has none of those issues.

LIKE ALL THESE SCHOOLS .. THEY MAKE MONEY FOR THE LOCALS, people of Holland don't want their money going over here to support the locals....just a little thought about owned territories we learned in undergraduate business classes. Sounds like total ** but then again define rigorous accreditation since you know LOL MUA doesn't have these issues (along with knowing that USE has these problems, I find you to be quiet knowledgeable in this matter ) oh integrity man.. i sense irony
