    Dorms

    Advertisements

Hi, i was wondering how the dorms are? Are they clean? I know MUA website states you can have a single if you apply in advance, but since there are so many students, is that still the case?

they are building new dorms anyways at potworks to accomodate all the new students in future semesters. your best bet is to opt out of the dorms and find suitable single bedroom housing on the island. it will make life so much better.

Agreed. Rawlins has mold, Potworks is lonely, and by living off campus, there's no need to deal with the "manager" of the dorms either.

These managers are pricks, and they charge you alot for a crapy accomodation. You dont have a kitchen sink(since no kitched) You will be sharring a room with a roomate, which should really be a single. Then they have silly rules,CANT use ur stove, hot plate etc.You have to wash your dishes in the washroom sink! You might not get alongwith ur roomate. And if u decide to leave,he wont pay you a dime back, from the 1600 you pay him up front.
The houses off campus are in the 350-550 range. But they are more than worth the money. Most houses are cleaner than rawlins, you have a decent size kitchen.
Did i mention the internet at Rawlins is slower than dial up back home.I think they have one DSL line, and a network 40 odd ppl.I know bcoz i have my landladys wireless connection and i can play Youtube, download movies,so its not the Internet on the Island, its the cheapness of the Rawlins managment.I hope school makes its own dorm and break off any links with Rawlins.

Are there any close apartment to campus? Does the school pick you up at your apartment?

they dont give u sinks/kitchens in the dorms so that you can buy food from the restaurant next to the dorms. we ate there almost everynight in med 1 and never got sick of it. it was good enough food depending on what your standards are. or you can always walk to the other food place down rawlins road. unfortunately, i cant use any names on this forum.

if your planning on staying the dorms I can from experience that potworks is alright. At first it was a bit of a shock because the place you get is quite basic and bearable when it comes to how clean it is. After cleaning it myself it was pretty decent and more than enough to get you by.

If your moving into the dorms from your parents place (assuming it is nice), it will be more of an adjustment for you and the rent may seem a bit high ($400-$450 US from what I recall including water and electricity). For a dorm this is a reasonable price, the school I came from charged more for their dorms, although a bit nicer but not larger.

The potworks dorms for first year students (there are apartments there as well) consist of a single room, seperate washroom, mini fridge, 2 basic chairs, single bed, desk, bar fridge, air conditioner, and microwave. You need to setup internet on your own. The big plus of potworks is that you are less than a 10 minute walk from school; however, there are no shops close by.
