    Exams in basic science

    Advertisements

i am going to be attending in may and was wondering if anyone can give me a heads up as to how the exams are.

are they multiple choice or essay form? how often are the exams? are they computerized or paper form? is the final grade determined on the average of all exams?

    thanks all!

    - Multiple choice exams in USMLE format (ie: clinical vignette and then choices).
    - Exams are written in paper right now but soon will move to computers I think when the new building is done.
    - Exams are every 3 weeks, you write 1-2 on Friday and then write more on Monday. If you are in Med1 you also have to write your lab exams on Tuesdays. You write a total of 5 exams for each class.
    - Final grade = avg of all exams and the final exam and any assignments/quizzes. How grades are determined depends on what class it is.

In med1 there are 5 blocks. For histology and anatomy you have a theory and lab exam at the end of each block. Each block is worth 20%, except for the first and last which are worth 15% and 25% respectively.

For anatomy the lab exam is worth 50% and the theory is worth the other 50%. In histology the lab is worth 35% and the theory is worth 65%.

For embryo the distribution are similar except that there is no lab exam. For EBM (evidence based medicine) there are assignments for each block and the final is worth 40%.

As you get into med 3, 4, 5, the exam is worth 25% of the total grade, and it is not 50% cumulative, and 50% current block any longer. It's usually more like 75 cumulative/25 or 80/20

Darn. It get's a bit tougher, but it's all relevant, you get used to it.

When I took anatomy, the lab was just a blank paper with lines that you fill in, same for histology, as well as pathology lab practical

    1. 2 terms ago, anatomy lab was 4 multiple choice, using a scantron.

    2. All other tests were MC, scantron. NO FILL IN.

    3. When you get to Micro., they do fill in the blank, or extended matching type questions, that is a lot tougher than multiple choice. But then again, there are 7-8 quizzes, you keep only your 5 highest grades, and all those together account for 5% of course grade.

last term all the tests were multiple choice using scantrons. even the labs for anatomy and histology were multiple choice with exception of one or two histology lab exams.
