Advertisements

Is there a phone jack in the dorms ? Do we have to bring our own phone, or is there one already in the dorm room? How does most student use vonage or other internet companies to call home? Is there wi-fi via out the dorms or we have to relie on hard lines.....

In Rawlins, there is an internet jack in the room, which would let you then split off into Vonage or other VoIP services (you'd need a router or hub for that). There are no phones provided. There might be wi-fi from other students, at least in Potworks. In Potworks, there were also phone jacks in the rooms, but it is pretty expensive to call home. Most students use cell phones to call on-island.

for potworks you have to setup your internet yourself by going into town. you get a modem which allows you access the internet. if you want wireless you have to bring your own router. I only saw "free" wireless internet at potworks when someone installed their own wireless router and forgot to password protect their connection.

for vonage, I suggest you get hardware that allows for a wire connection; you can then just attach a cordless phone if you need mobility when using your phone. the cell phones that you get on the island are expensive to call home; vonage or another internet phone company is the way to go for that.

    Additional Phone option

This is something I am always surprised to find the classmates that have been there for a year or more dont know about.

Once you have a cell phone, you can buy a "222" phone card from A1 downtown for example. You can load the card onto yoru cell phone. You then dial 222, follow a brief prompt, then dial your home number. The cost is about 12cents U.S. per minute, which is not bad. I like to use it if i want or need to make a call during the day and I'm not at home near my Vonage phone.

Once you buy a card, then you can get an online account, and refill your minutes very easily online, in a minute or so.

it may not replace need for Vonage, but maybe close.

Yes, all incoming is free on Nevis. All plans students get are usually prepaid.

There are two companies that offer broadband: C&W and CaribCable.

With C&W, you have to buy your own DSL modem, and pay an installation fee, and have to get a phone line installed. Here is their site: http://broadband.cw.kn/residential.html All rates in EC)

With Carib Cable, all the equipment is free to use, and there's free installation, but you need to subscribe to local cable. Their site is down as of right now, but their site is www.caribcable.com, and click on "Nevis", and then Internet Services on the left.

Personally, I like Carib Cable better. I've had pretty good experiences with them.
