Is the water safe on the island to drink from the tap if you filtered it via Brita or do I have to buy bottled water?

It is safe to drink from the tap, no treatment needed.

I've been on the island since September '06 (did pre-med here) and I've been drinking mostly tap water. I do suggest you bring a Brita jug with you to filter out the excess calcium/salt in the water to avoid kidney stones

would a brita be able to filter out calcium deposits?

also, the water comes from a volcanic spring right? i would assume it doesn't need much filtering..
