Getting all your stuff to the island...

    Advertisements

First of all - let me say hi to everyone - as I've been lurking around here for a bit

Anyway - I guess my biggest concern isn't work load, or bugs, or how much food costs - but how do ya'all live on 2 suitcases worth of stuff?! I've read countless threads about I wish I brought this, I wish I brought that - and I'm thinking to myself - 2 suitcases is enough clothes for a week... an entire semester... wooooooooooooo!

So what are the secrets? I was thinking to just pay the fee to check more baggage - but there's no way in h-e-double hockey sticks I could carry that much stuff on my own!

    Stuff to island

I take you are a female. So am I. I was 41 when I went to the island. I had two large suitcases and a carry-on. I made it just fine. I packed my laptop into the suitcase with a printer, one ream of paper and some printer refills. I carried some notebooks and pens and pencils. I surrounded the stuff with underwear and such.

The other suitcase I took my clothing and two pair of shoes. I had a carryon with makeup, medications and such.

I did it.... most can. Had my books shipped to the island. After the first semester you can take your empty suitcases home and re-fill them. You don't have much room in the dorm. You have to move all that stuff too. You don't need a lot of clothing or shoes the first semester.

Purchase the stuff you need on the island after that. You can carry a pillow with you and pack a set of sheets.

    Good luck.

The idea of only taking 2 suitcases full of stuff makes me want to cry!!

When I went away to college my freshman year, I loaded a mini-van and a U-Haul - and my bedroom @ home looked like I was still there.

I believe in one of the threads here someone mentioned a shipping company that can parcel your goods to the island for a fair price. I remember reading that some of the students would to this for food and what not....Maybe you can search the forum and find that info...Or you can always pay the airline more money and carry extra weight with you.

    Cheap shipping

I heard about a cheap shipper called Tropical shipping , a friend of mine used them to ship eight boxes for 110 dollars, the only negative with them is that they take around 2 and 1/2 weeks....but hey your stuff supposedly gets to the island at the end....

Although I haven't dealt with them personally, it's definitely an option worth checking out

I've seen the Tropical trucks on Nevis a few times. I didn't know it was that cheap! 2.5 weeks is not bad, seeing as packages via USPS can take just as long (sometimes longer!)

Do you know where they ship from? What are the ports stateside?

Kearny wouldn't be that bad. I live in PA but I grew up in NY/NJ so all the more reason to get friends back home to send me stuff

They ship from Miami I know, and somewhere up the East Coast. I used them when I was on Nevis. The only problem is you have to ship your stuff to Miami, then have an agent there ship it the rest of the way. You can ask Gradner for more information on them. That is the same company they use for shipping cadavers and supplies.

I'm confused - their website says you can send stuff from Kearny, NJ.
