    MUA-N vs. Ross Merp

    Advertisements

Hello all, I wanted to get some opinions, I got accepted into MUA-N as well as Ross Merp program (kind of a prep course). Ross was my first choice, since its more recognized, but now that I read more about MUA it doesnt seem that bad and I can start in Jan 08 where Ross i do the Merp oct-feb then go to SOM in May. I need to make a decision quick... what would you guys do?

to me, MERP seems like a money maker. IMHO i'd start now, but yes Ross does have the better reputation etc. i'm sure others have been in this situation in the past, i have not so maybe they can chime in. an extra 15 grand just to maybe go to a more recognized school doesn't seem worth it to me.

    Koukla-

I'm sure you're gonna make the right decision that suits you. The key phrase there is "suits you," because I have an opinion just like everyone else here and it's not always the best for you, although it could be. Ross has been around longer but it's more expensive and the island is not as good as Nevis. I personally think that getting started here in January would be nice coz this place is off the chain. I mean I enjoy it a lot, love the students, faculty, and the school ambience. I would say this... if you're big on practicing west-coast then mos def go to ROSS; even though we'll prolly get Cali sometime in the next year or so. On the other hand, if you're gonna practice in Canada or east-coast then definitely COME TO MUA. We'd love to have you.

I also had applied to Ross and MUA and faced a similar decision. I choose MUA because I couldn't justify the extra cost associated with going to ross (the extra certification didn't make a difference considering where I was interested in practicing). I was accepted to both Ross med1 and MUA med1. On the other hand, I think Ross may offer a more developed academic environment and facilities; MUA has the basic facilities which is enough to teach you but I get the impression that Ross is a bit more hi-tech (just an impression I have; I have not physically been to Ross)

I don't think attending either school would be the wrong choice, it is just different paths to the same goal.

MUA will most definitely NOT get California within the next year; they haven't even applied yet and reliable sources indicate they don't plan on applying for atleast 3-4 years; once they apply it takes about 2 yrs for the approval itself.

As for the OP; go for whatever suits you; they are both carib schools and will get you to the same place.

    Hyloran-

Sup buddy, I was just curious, do you go to MUA? I'm sure your reliable sources are feeding you real good information but I'm dying to know the six-year plan that your source has drawn out for you. Believe me, you'll make a lot of students happy here if you can reveal that information to us. I have asked professors, deans, and called up Gardner and no one even mentioned anything close to that. Thanx and good luck in your studies.

Yup I go to MUA; as for the plan; that's pretty much it; there are other things that need to be set up prior to applying for Cali like getting the Step 1 pass rate above a certain number, like having enough people graduate so that MUA can show a solid record of achievement, etc.

I hope it doesnt' take that long; but if you know MUA, you'll know that they don't do anything quickly.

    cali

You could look at Saba's history, it took them about 15 years before they applied for cali approval, and still had to fight for it. MUA has only been around for about 7 years now.
We were also told to forget about cali for at least several years during our clin med interviews.
