I would suggest contacting CARMs as they will be an excellent source for factual information on the methods available to practice in Canada/Ontario. CARMs does the residency matching for Canada.

There's 2 ways; both of which are difficult.

    1) Apply for a residency in Canada for a residency which has a lot of IMG positions available. The best example of this is Family Medicine. There are a few specialist positions available but they are very tough to obtain. Once you finish residency in Canada, you're good to go. There might be a Return-of-Service agreement required to get the position, but you can deal with that once you're finished with residency.

    2) Apply for a residency in the US; there's way more spots and IMG's have much better chances of securing a specialty. Recently, Ontario started to accept the USMLE Steps 1/2/3 as being equivalent to the MCCQE1/MCCQE2 exams. So you don't even have to write the exams if you wish to practice only in Ontario. After you finish residency in the US, you apply for licensure in Ontario. Then you're good to go.

Keep in mind, this is the simple way of looking at it. Things can and do change on a daily/weekly/monthly/yearly basis. The Canadian medical establishment is unsure of whether they really want IMGs in their system or not; so they're not about to make things easier and might even make things harder for us. Your best bet is to contact the RCPSC and the specific residency program involved to get more info.
