MUA students on rotation: call me

    Advertisements

A popular New York City radio talk show host, Bob Grant, was fond of saying: "I don't care what you call me, just call me." I, fossildoc, extend the same invitation to my fellow students who have moved on to clinicals. We don't get many posts from you, possibly because you have to sleep on your feet, but when you've reached that momentary pause at the bottom of your Tidal Volume curve (you did pay attention in physio, right?), you could PM me for the purpose of, as they say, socially redeeming discourse regarding your experiences. All correspondence in strict confidence; you can "dk" me anyway (dk = don't know, from Mission Impossible II, Tom Cruise).

Brain surgeon to another: "Hey, this isn't rocket science".
Rocket scientist to another: "Hey, this isn't brain surgery".

    Clinicals

I recently began clinicals in January with GMC in Atlanta. I am currently doing internal medicine, which is divided into three, four week rotations. My first rotation was with a GI specialist, although it counted as an Internal Medicine rotation. We observed several colonoscopy and endoscopy prodedures as well as PEG tube placements. Schedule was Monday-friday and no on-call coverage was requried. I am in the second rotation of internal medicine with a general internist. We see cases involving hypertension, diabetes, weight loss management, thyroid problems, and the flu. THe medical students perform the initial h/p and then report the finding to the attending. The students and the attending see the patient together and then formulate a diagnosis and treatment plan.

So far, I have enjoyed my rotations. Just remember what you put into it is what you will get out of it. I have another 6 weeks of internal medicine and then I will go into family practice. I rotate with people from MUA as well as people from other schools. Don't really see other students from MUA unless you happen to be in the same rotation or during Grand Rounds when all of GMC students meet.
