Licensing problems if you transfer between foreign med schools

    Advertisements

A couple of people have mentioned "licensing problems" if you transfer from one foreign med school to another foreign school. I already know that if you transfer from a CA approved school to an unapproved school then you can't get licensed in CA (and vice versa). So what other problems can you run into for licensing? Also is it true that some states do not license doctors who have transferred between foreign med school? If so, which states?

I have heard from some knowledgable schools that many states will require you to have done at least 1 academic year in the school you graduated from.
If you transfer a bunch of times it will raise some red flags for residencies, so you will just need to justify your transfers soundly.

    advice

Some states like IL and VA state you must have at least one year with the school you graduate from. If you do transfer try to only do it once and it should not be a problem.

The board may ask you why did you transfer? Just have a good reason, like financial loans, rotations available, and never put down another school even if it was horrible. Because remember part of your education was with this school and people always like positive people.

Where did you get the information on being unable to get licensed in CA if you transfer from an unapproved school to an approved school?

That's the position I am in right now. Classes haven't begun for fall yet but I've been accepted into the University of Bari (Italy) program in English and I have just learned that although the school is approved it is only approved for their Italian medical program.

Exactly. The list of EU medical schools with CMB-approved English programs is actually pretty short. If you are not starting out at a CMB-approved program, you will need to start all over again at another CMB-approved program (yes, repeating the years) in order to be California eligible.

(Also... congrats on successfully reanimating an 8-year-old post.)
