A Ray of Light for California Licensure??

    Advertisements

    Hello Valuemd Peeps,
Just stumbled upon this while perusing through the Ca State Medical Board Website....Even if you went to a school that is NOT approved by the board, you can be considered for licensure if you.

1-Hold an unrestricted license in another state CONTINUOUSLY for AT LEAST 10 YEARS
2-Be Board Certified by one of the boards of the ABMS
3-Clean Record, no disciplinary actions, etc....

    Law section.

A big question is whether this would make your educational background accepted elsewhere as though you'd graduated from a California-approved school.

The California-approved label is often brought up on the forum, in part because some other states use it was a basis for who they grant licensure in their states. So it's not just that hordes of people want to practice medicine in California (though some do).

That is a fairly recent development over the past year or two, dksamp, and it is good news for people who really-really-REALLY want to work there... eventually. California also has the largest number of residency positions of any state, which is one of the main reasons that it is of importance to FMGs applying to the US Match (in addition to the handful of other states following the CMB list, as drrich2 pointed out).

Nice enough place, IMHO, but I wouldn't want to live there -- although a lot of people do!

agreed, this is a great development for those interested in Cali, unfortunately it does nothing for those wanting to obtain residency, and it does nothing for me since I have zero desire to practice in that state.

I think that is the biggest thing, houmd... this decision does nothing to free up the vast wealth of California residency positions to additional foreign grads. Yes, it offers people with a serious itch to live and work in the Golden State an extended pathway to get there, but it will not help with the Match at all. Too bad, really. Still, better than nothing for those who love California.
