Let me save you the trouble if you're thinking about it..

Look only, and repeat, only at established foreign schools. This means either established schools based in their home country or firmly established Caribbean schools like Ross, SGU, AUC, SABA or SMU.

Why is it that SOE is on practically every forum issuing his/her misguided and/or misinformed advice to those who are earnestly searching for honest advice and information concerning one of the most important decisions they will ever make as a medical professional, i.e., which medical school should they attend in order to be maximally successful both as a medical student and as a future practicing physician? SOE, please stop giving out advice that is either misleading or useless. The American International University, School of Medicine (now listed as The American International University, South America since it has added several more professional programs the last year) has a website you could have given in an unbiased manner to drseb (www.aism.edu) without the ascerbic modifiers! Let's be fair, balanced and unafraid of telling the truth. I know the professionals who operate this medical complex and they are both highly credentialed and student oriented. The AISM has over 200 students currently in the system with a first time pass rate on the USMLE I and II of 83% (which is higher than Ross, SGU, AUC, SABA, SMU and the USESOM). As a consultant for many foreign medical schools over the years, I know the strengths and weaknesses of most of them and am interested only in folks being told the unvarnished truth in each case. Therefore, I have no particular bias for one or the other and neither should you, in telling the unvarnished truth when responding to an innocent but critical inquiry by those who have a right to know the truth about such an important matter.

Not so sure about that. AUC has consistently been in the upper 80's. So has SGU. G

Perhaps they have improved over the last two years but the most recent NBME data I have (2004) does not support your comment with regard to either AUC or SGU. Both schools are a few percentage points lower than the numbers you quote. However, not by much. Both schools have above average credentials, philosophies and licensure records as do many other schools in the Caribbean, as well as, other countries such as Mexico, Costa Rica, Guyana, Brazil, etc. I do not support one school against the other, however, and just did not want to let mistruths about this one school pass without correction. The unvarnished truth about each foreign medical school needs to be available to all prospective students in order that they can determine which program and location matches their personal proclivities and philosophies. Ross, St. G's, AUC, SMU, USESOM, AISM, St. Matt.'s, Saba, etc. are all about the same with regard to their academic curriculum and its implementation but they vary greatly with respect to their infrastructural strengths, political stability and availability of physical comforts and personal amenities (potable drinking water; entertainment; safety; housing costs; costs). And, as is always the case, different strokes for different folks. "Good luck and good night". Regards.

Where does the NBME post the pass rates for the various schools? I would love to see that. I was not aware that data was published. G

The information is available at several locations; directly with the NBME and indirectly via their links with each of the schools. In addition, individuals who have an official capacity within the accreditation pipeline, can access the information. Individual student scores are not available, of course.

To get you started: www.nbme.org/about/about.asp; then, www.nbme.org/about/contact.asp; then, www.usmle.org/scores/2004perf.htm, then link to your school code number and download the information. If your school is registered with the service there should be no problem. On the other hand, if you are unble to get what you need with this link, there are other ways to get the information.
    1. Check with your school's administrator in charge of institutional testing records and/or the personal NBME liaison working with the school; they have the relative data and information that can be released on a confidential basis; some do so on a "need to know" basis but, I have found most to be quiet cooperative (Knowledge + empathy = humanitarian success).
    2. Additionally, there are a number of USMLE related links that one can access using google's search engine.
    3. Just in case you do not have the NBME contacts (are also quiet useful): 3750 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104-3102; 215-590-9700 (Examinee support services); 215-590-9457 (Fax). Good luck. Socrates777
