    Best schools for the south

    Advertisements

    Hey all,
Just wondering what offshore schools everyone thinks are the best for doing clinicals and electives in southern states like South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, etc? I thought St. Matts had one in Georgia and a few have some in Florida but does any school have strong ties with the south that would maybe make obtaining a residency there easier? ( I thought I had read your more likely to match at a hospital youve done clinicals or electives at) Ive repeatedly read on here you can set up electives where ever you want but I also read on here some places will reject FMG requests so just wondering if anybody had any ideas on schools.

1)more important than where you do rotations is where you can get licensed. Make sure you can get licesned from the school you choose in the state you want
    2) remember, if you want to a us school, you'd not limit yourself to where you do rotations. so think long term. dont pick s school for mere chance to do a rotation in a particular place. MOre improtant is how the students do from that schoo. It annoys the heck out of students to hear it but the truth is it DOES matter where you go as an img; for two reasons. The first is that some schools have a better rep and those grads are taken more seriously by program directors. The other is that IMGs are often that exact student populace for whom a good teacher makes the real difference. And ther eis some lousy teaching out there. for that reason, gazing at the usmle pass rates may indicate a school that does a better job helping the students through the med ed process. Its not merely "up to the individual student" as some would simpllistically have it.
    3) you MAY NOT just set up any outside electives. there is a limit in terms of weeks AND some states will not grant you a license if you've done ANY outside roations as an IMG (even if they're at Top U USA)
    4) while you get may be more attractive for having done a rotation at a hospital (assuming you do well) this wont make you more attractively "regionally". That is more likely to match anywhere in the south because you did roations in the south.

    good luck.

At AUC, my husband secured his entire 4th year in the south, all with respect to following Texas licensure requirements.

Along the lines of what Steph posted, I dont think its a good idea to worry about where your 3rd year cores are located. They are only 10 months in duration. Choose a good school, and bank on setting up your 4th year electives in the locations of your choice, with residency in mind beyond that.
