how do you convince friends/family that going offshore is the best thing for you to do?
I havent told my parents yet, that what im scared of hehe.
But alot of my friends are saying things like:
    is this for real?
do really want to be a doctor that bad?
you wont get anywhere once you graduate.
If you dont get into med school in the US that means youre not good enough to be a doctor.
You're gonna be in a hut for the next 2 years w/o food, water and/or electricity.
why dont you keep try for dental/grad school/nursing/ etc school?
They just dont take me seriously. I ve been researching this for the last 2 years, and i dont know how to sum everything up into a statement for them.
    Share your story advice/experiance...thanks!

    RE:

I have a few friends like that and the only thing you can say to them is shut up you don't know what your talking about.

As for your parents, just show them the successes of many foreign grads; and ask them how many different physicians they have seen over their lifetime. Then ask them if they have ever asked any physician where he or she went to med school. If your parents are not in the medical field then chances are they have never asked, and at least 1/3 of the physicians they have seen were most likely foreign grads.

    Good luck

I got the same thing from a lot of people. i worked in a hospital and all of my friends there all made fun of me. My dad, who is also a doc, was extremely sceptical (and probably still is even though one of my uncles is an IMG). My non-medical frieds told me I was nuts and I had to break up with my girlfriend to go because the distance was going to be too much, esp knowing that I would be spending most of my time studying instead of talking to her.

I felt bad about the girlfriend, but she wasn't gonna be the one and i knew I had to give up some things to get where I wanted to be. As far as everyone doubting me, I just listened to them, told them "thank you" for their care and concern, but I said I was doing it anyway. My friends and family know that when I put my mind to something I will not give up. So they didn't try too hard to convince me otherwise... they just said they thought it was dumb. MY payback is going to be that I can do clinicals in hospitals where some of my friends work and the ones that are not docs, I can boss around (in a playful way of course) !! My family sees me succeeding and that makes them happy. When I talk to my dad or uncle and can discuss things that they never thought I would understand it feels really good.

What I am saying is that the only way to proove the foriegn schools worth to you parents and friends who have never known people to undergo this process, is for you to show them your own success and determination. It is blatantly obvious that people can and do succeed at this or schools like this would not exist... You can spout statistics all day long, but my bet is that they won't believe it until they see it with you.

    an answer?

How do you convince friends and family it is the right thing to do?

    Do It!!

And if you fail they were right and you have lived and learned.

In the end your family probably wants what is best for you and know less about the situation than you do. The unknown can be scary. Try and provide the best info to them as you can, the worst outcomes as you see it, and the risk involved. Only you know what you are willing to risk to find out. The process will not kill you and either way will be a great learning experance. Good luck.

Most of the people that told me I couldn't do it, are working at Wal Mart and driving a UPS truck.
Seriously, the ONLY opinions that matter are those of people in the medical profession.
People that work at the GAP or in some hair salon, have the word " Can't" enbroidered on their foreheads. It's the biggest losers that are usually the most vocal about telling you that you can't do it. People that are successful, give positive advice and say things like " Go for it. Work hard and you will accomplish all of your goals"

Go to any hospital and find a pack of doctors that are IMG's. The are a great example that it can be done

Once you get to medical school ( if not already there ) you will notice one peculiar fact : About half the class is made up of doctor's kids!!!!!
Now to me this speaks volumes.

My partner's son is at Ross, doing 4th year electives.

Uninformed people outside of medicine may have opinions, but they are worthless. Ignore them and listen to people that know the facts, and the facts are you can and will have a job upon graduation, if you take care of business once enrolled in med school. Physicians that tell you otherwise are ignorant to the sheer numbers of IMG's currently practicing medicine. There is a tremendous need for IMG's. It is difficult to get certain residencies, but there are plenty of positions in various medical specialties. you will have a lot to choose from, and when you are making a fat 6 figure income in a few years, you can take the naysayers out to dinner and toast your success, and their failure as prognisticators

BIGGEST LESSON IN LIFE: NEVER LET ANYONE TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN'T DO SOMETHING!!
Come back from the medical school with your degree and tell them look what I did...Then watch their faces light up

    screw them.

Do what YOU want to do and do what it takes to get there.

All my friends said the exact thing and laugh at the notion that I'm going to a place they call 'ClubMed'. I dont care, I know what I need to do to get where I want to be.

I have the EXACT experience as bts4202 so I feel him. My dad is a doc who is wary about me thinking about CaribSchools and a girl that I will eventually have to break up as its going to be school before girls no matter what...

If these people were your friends, they would support you no matter what you elect to do with your life as long its not putting your life in danger. We all must take risks to make advances.

ClubMed Med..... how many of us have heard that expression coming derisively from someone's mouth that we thought we respected?

    Often

Often the only way to do that is by finishing. One of my best friends made all kinds of jokes about it. Now guess who he just put down as his PCP? G
