IMPORTANT: the 5th pathway vs ECFMG Mexico-- you all's opinions/INFO please.

    Advertisements

i am very new to this so sorry for all the questions. i have been reading alot....tryin to decide if Med School in Mexico is for me in the next 3 months!

so if i am from the US and want to get my MD, there is 2 routes?
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    a. the 5th pathway
    or
    b. ECFMG

    correct?

    correct me if im wrong:
    --------------------------------
    1. 5th pathway: 4 years Med School in Mexico but you leave early and dont do your rotations or servicio social in Mexico. Your 5th year would be in NY or PR doing clinicals. then at the end of the year, you apply for aresidency? so your 6th year is your first year of residendy in the US?

    2. ECFMG: you do your 4 years of Med School in Mexico. You do your rotations and servicio social in Mexico. then you take a test to get into the US?
if you pass, then your first year in the US, you would already be in a residency?

well, you would be ready to apply for the match to be in a residency after you pass the USMLE's

yes, you basically have it. the only thing i would add is that the 5th pathway was traditionally designed to REPLACE the mexican med school degree. so, you would not have a 6th year, you would complete 5th pwy and get a certificate or whatever, and be allowed to practice medicine with this cert. i do think that many of the mexican schools will recognize the fifth pathway, and also award a degree now, but that may not be the case. also, verify that all states will recognize the 5th pwy.

so this could be the way to go?

    1. 4 years med school in Mexico
    2. 5th pathway for a year in NY or PR
    3. 6th year---i can practice medicine?? or do you have to do a residency?

i guess the thing i dont know is probably a stupid question----do all Dr's have to do a residency and for how long? lets say i wanted to go into Family Practice. how many years would it take me assumintg i take the 5th pathway??
    thanks for the help..

you would certainly have to do a residency. 5th pathway does NOT replace residency, it merely lets you fulfil a med school obligation and obtain a certificate that is widely considered the equivilent of a medical degree.

one thing to keep in mind...in order to qualify for 5th pathway, you must have completed a bachelor's degree and fulfilled all of the traditional pre-med requirements.

the 5th pathway used to be very popular. it fell out of favor, i think because of the huge cost, the fact that most folks never got a medical degree (just had the certificate), and maybe for some other reasons i am not aware of

at my school, we have the option of doing the 5th pathway. nobody does it due to the huge cost and the lack of a clear benefit.

also, i am fluent in spanish.

i know some have discussed it on this forum about the 5th pathway vs ECFMG

    * which will get you into practice faster in the USA?

    * which route would you recommend?
