Sad Story of IMG that got impossible Orthopedic Residency in Canada

    Advertisements

I came across what seemed like a super achievement by a Caribbean graduate. USMLE I 262 and obtained a super coveted spot at McMaster Orthopedic residency in Canada.

Apparently left ortho residency after 2 years going to family practice. obtaining Canada medical license only to be ultimately revoked.

No need to mention medical school though school has quite a good reputation and I have supervised some of their resident grads.

All this is public information so not intended as any kind of attack or defamation.

Just amazing after working so hard and getting a super score and an impossible (difficult for US / Canada grad to get) residency.

I don't really see that as sad. it is very important to be in an area of medicine or another profession that you enjoy. This person I do not think practices medicine any more and went into finance (according to info online).

There was a general surgeon I worked with that quit being an attending surgeon with a good full-time position in Canada and went back to family medicine residency. Very rare this happens but if you are not happy doing something it is best to make a change rather than doing something you do not enjoy.

One of my classmates matched to peds and left residency to become a pilot. Good for people to find their passion. Sometimes it is not medicine despite starting this along this path.

Canadian surgical residency positions are far from impossible.

"Impossible" is a figure of speech. In reality what % of Caribbean medical school graduates obtain ortho residencies eith in Canada or US? In my humble experience and knowledge almost 30 years post residency it is extremely low could say a rarity.

If you read the Canada med board decision to revoke license including multiple incidents/reviews it doesn't seem the reason stems from a change of heart

I agree it is rare to a surgical residency match.

I just saw the revoked license part. seems like he was not actually seeing patients and made up his notes at time. also prescribing pain mediations like M&M's.

which area of medicine do you practice in?
