    Studying Medicine in Africa

    Advertisements

Has anyone on here studied in Africa? If so, where are you now?
The clinical exposure to infectious diseases would be phenomenal experience.
Obviously, studying in Africa is not ideal for Non-Americans/Canadians.

If you're adventurous and open for challenges, then obtaining a medical degree in Africa is a great opportunity to test yourself. Although most states of this continent are considered to be the third-world countries, Africa offers some of the best medical programs with a high hands-on training quality. Studying here is especially beneficial for those IMGs who aren't able to enter prestigious international medical schools. A great variety of specialities is also offered to the applicants, from pathology to pharmacology.

I am from Africa and looking back, I would have gone to school there if I had not already started in the Caribbean. Would have cost less for similar value.
If you’re thinking about it, my choices in order would be:
    1. South Africa. Lots of great schools, most offering MBBCh
    2. Nigeria. Mostly MBBS but some MD too. Very many options to choose from
    3. Ghana. Fewer choices.
I’m sure there are good options elsewhere. Egypt for instance. I personally won’t go to Egypt for safety. The 3 in my list are places which have produced good residency matches that I am aware of.

Thank you for the response. From my research, most South African medical schools only accept people from Southern Africa.
I would love more info on Nigeria and Ghana. Where can I find their match rates?

You cannot talk about match rates the same way you do for US or Caribbean schools because the majority of students in those places donít intend or end up working in the US. Only a select few who are wealthy enough or lucky enough to take the USMLE end up matching so the number is not very significant.
What is important is that coming from the US or Canada, you can always fly back and take your USMLE and that plus your MD is really all you need to match. As long as you went to a WHO recognized medical school, it doesnít matter where that school is.

Caribbean colleges and universities is also the best option for higher medical studies. Caribbean colleges are the first preference of students for medical study.
