Advice for Caribbean Pre-Med: Where Should I Apply?

    Advertisements

    Hello,

I am a Jamaican citizen currently studying at a university in Ontario. I have no Canadian PR or citizenship, but I hold US permanent residency.
I really want to go to medical school but I am confused to where I should apply to due to my status. Due to the various experiences of foreign medical schools in this forum,
which medical school do you think do I have the highest chances of getting into that will also promise me a good residency? Additionally, what options do I have if my GPA is too low for most US medical schools?

    Thanks.

a "good residency" in the US? (it's not clear in your post)
Any DO school in the US would be a better bet than any offshore med school.

uhh according to what? We don't know you, your GPA, MCAT etc

Look, unless you are over 35yo (and even then) and unless you have kids, you should take the time it takes to raise your GPA and get a good MCAT score.

Offshore med school should always be the last option.

    Hey,

I am a Canadian (Jamaican background) studying medicine at UWI Mona. My GPA was too low (3.2/4.0) for Canadian schools and many American medical schools. I applied to the Big 4 Caribbean schools but I couldn't afford the high cost. On a whim, I decided to apply to all three UWI medical campuses. The cost is significantly cheaper than the Big 4 (even though the programs are 5 years). UWI is working with the US department of education to offer financial assistance to Americans studying at UWI. (You should look into it). Additionally, a lot of UWI Mona students obtain residency in the US--one of the big spots for UWI Mona med grads is Englewood Health Centre in New Jersey.

The program is not geared towards studying for USMLEs like the big 4, so it will be a lot of self-studying on your part to pass the exams. However, the lectures and clinical teaching especially should bring you up to speed. Additionally, if you get government sponsored tuition you will only pay $5000 USD, compared to $28,000USD.

    Check out my post here:

If you can afford the Big 4, (I believe US Department of Education gives money to US permanent residents to attend them) then I would apply to them as well and weigh your options.

Also note:Canadian medical schools do not accept international students. You must at least have a Canadian permanent residency to matriculate to a Canadian medical school.
