    Online Medical School?

Are there any online medical schools for the basic sciences courses?

OK, so maybe for basic sciences. For clinicals, no way - it's insane.

You have to actually touch a patient to do a procedure, to palpate, to percuss. The best doctors I've ever seen diagnose by feeling with their hands, looking with their eyes, hearing, smelling, and noticing the subtle look of the patient, the nuances of movement, expression etc. that contribute to the final diagnosis.

I gain more experience in an hour in a hospital room with two patients that I would in 100 hours reading online and watching medical videos. You never forget.

New is not always better! There is a reason you can't use a CT, MRI and biochem workup to diagnose everything. The same policy applies here. Sometimes you just have to percuss to be sure and go back to the plain film/contrast old-school style.

Plus, there's something to be said for the human side of medicine! Isn't part of the attraction of medicine for many people the benefit of human to human interaction? Of really the traditional theory that a joke, a caring touch or word can make a world of difference to people who are in pain?

If we do online medicine in the future, I'll quit. Sounds sterile and boring.

Obviously, I don't have a desire to go into radiology.

How many individual courses are there total in a good basic sciences program? 20? 25? Now imagine hiring a world class media team and paying 20 or 25 of the best professors in the world to develop a high resolution DVD video program of their teaching to produce a world class basic sciences video course. Then you provide a web site with interactive videos, audio, books, images, diagrams, 3d glasses, 3d rotating models, quizzes, tests, exams, oral exams with live video chat using skype.com, group chat rooms, medical discussion forums and every other possible combination of rich media learning. You can take as many or as few classes as you want per semester. The discussion forum would have dozens of adjunct medical professors to answer questions.

Only the 2 or 3 years of basic sciences courses would be online (choose your own pace!). The clinical rotations would be live and in person, non-negotiable.

Does this make more sense now?

I agree with arista29. In addition to the clinical side of things, however, there are simply too many ethics and quality questions, methinks. How do you test these individuals in a manner which guarantees that they know their stuff, and they aren't cheating during an online examination? IMHO, gross anatomy needs to be hands-on, even if there are schools trying to go without it. There are some classes that could have an online element (I attended a school in the States that had a biochem course with a strong online portion), but I would shy strongly away from the entire first half of medical education being done that way.

As far as your prediction goes, the idea that there will be 1000 online schools better than Hopkins, Vienna, Trinity-Dublin, any of the Ivies, or Karolinska (etc.) is simply laughable. Online schools are very (VERY) rarely even remotely competitive for a reason, and the other moving parts that make a medical school excellent (world class hospital affiliations, groundbreaking research, first rate facilities) cannot be digitally duplicated in a manner than means anything.

While lectures could be viewed on line all practical and clinical learning requires hands-on experience that cannot be acquired on-line

The idea behind an online medical school would be to have 2 years of basic sciences course work done online in a virtual environment (including USMLE study), and then 2 years of "physical reality" on site (NOT VIRTUAL) clinical experience in a hospital.

By making the basic sciences portion of medical school online and virtual, it should help cut the costs of the education.

A pre-med program could also be done at this online university.

Does anyone want to fund the creation of this online medical school? or should we assume that in 10 years the vast majority of medical schools will be online by market forces?
