    UCD or St George's University?

    Advertisements

Hey guys. I just got accepted to both UCD (Ireland) and St. George's for their 4-year med school programs. Now it's a problem of figuring out which is a better school for me. It would be great if I could get some input from you guys on that matter.

My end goal is to get into residencies in Canada (I'm Canadian), but I don't mind having prospects in the US either. I feel like it's probably impossible either way to get into a more competitive residency, but I would like to at least try to keep that option open as well.

Here's what I'm thinking so far:
    - St George's cost way less than UCD, which may or may not be an issue
    - UCD is a university in a commonwealth country, so technically UCD has more prestige than St George's (But does this matter outside of personal pride? I mean that does UCD give more opportunities outside Canada should I choose to go somewhere else such as Europe or Australia for a living?)
    - Both universities would likely have the same amount of difficulty in getting back into Canada for residency
    - St. George's would have better prospects in the US, since I rotate there for 3rd and 4th year
    - St. George's would make it easier for me to study for the USMLE, and maybe the MCCEE/MCCQE, but I'm on my own for UCD, since their curriculum is entirely different
    *More to come

Firstly, SGU is in Grenada, which is also part of the British Commonwealth. So, no prestige there really.

I'll make it as simple as I can for you. If you want to practice in Europe, UCD. If the States, SGU. Seeing as you want Canada, I would go SGU. They only problem I can think of is that if you screw up, you wont get a residency match and your probably royaly screwed (unless you got a couple back up plans, which most Caribb grads do). UCD will let you fall back on the European system, not sure how complex it is there though, so my words may be meaningless. But you get the general gist.

From a Canadian perspective, there are a number of Caribbean grads practicing in Canada. That being said, there are far more Irish grads.

I would go with Ireland. For visiting electives in Canada, there are several schools that won't accept Carib students but will accept Irish ones. The only thing about Irish schools is that you won't be spoon-fed for the USMLEs, which you will want to take.

    Good luck.

    Schools? What?
Both Caribb students and Irish students do their rotations with their respective schools. Caribb will most likely do their rotations in the US whereas Irish do it in Ireland. As far as residencies in Canada go, they arent biased between Caribb or Irish, they are both equally disadvantaged.

    Awaiting rebuttal.

Personally, I would choose UCD over anything the Carib has to offer. From my understanding, it will be easier to match coming from Ireland than from the Carib. Again, that is only my understanding... DOUBLE CHECK WITH THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. If they tell you that everything is equal, I'd rather be in Ireland.

In order to do a visiting elective in Canada, you have to arrange it through a Canadian medical school. There are a few medical schools in Canada that will not allow a Carib student to do a visiting elective, but will allow an Irish student to do so.

This does make a difference, as the likelyhood of obtaining a residency in Canada goes from impossible to merely unlikely if one is able to do a visiting elective and network successfully.

i agree that some medical schools won't allow carib students to do an elective rotation there but will allow a european med student to. I have called up a few med schools in the US and they all at first said sure we let foreign medical students rotate at our hospitals then when they found out that i was a carib student they said ohh we don't allow carib students to rotate sorry.

Wait, doesn't it make it bloody impossible to get anywhere in the US if I choose to go to Ireland? I don't have a green card, after all, and it would be even less likely for me to have rotations in the US, considering the fact that I then have to split precious elective time between US and Canada...
