Theory for lack of IMG Residencies

    Advertisements

I spoke with another off shore student, who told me that the reason that US citizen IMGs have such a low percentage of matches for residencies, is that decisions for residents are made by doctors in the programs, and that because the US medical system has been inundated with physicians from the Indian subcontinent, they will choose a foreign (read: Indo Pak) resident applicant over a US citizen IMG. What is your opinion on that? First request: skip the "racist" dialog; that is a first and obvious opinion. I'm not sure how that theory "jibes" with the fact that between 80-95% of US citizens who are students of off shore schools are ALSO of subcontinental ancestry, although usually born in the US or Canada. Still, I'd like to hear what others have to say.

Many of the indo-pak IMGs have gone through an ardous education and have 'proved' themselves in their native countries while us Caribbean folks are broken down heroes on a last chance power drive.

There's probably a lot that goes into it. Scores, grades, clinical performance, Dean's letter, interview, and yes.. the school.

a lot of those indian docs coming over to do residency here in the US were attendings or the equivalent back in india. they have some serious experience in knowledge that's unmatched by someone coming right out of med school

That's the lamest reasoning ever. Would it be fair to admit a college grad from say UMass into Harvard College (the undergrad) just because he has already done this before and has work-study experience? Hell no...

there is a VAST difference between UG, or even med school and RESIDENCY....your comparision would work for accepting a FMG into a US med school, but bottom line for residency is that there are patients involved...a person who had been an attending is going to know leaps and bounds over some fresh faced med school grad that really know very little about pt care (heck! there is a big difference between some one who has had even one year of residency training and that newly minted doc).

now being more experienced (or being unexperienced) can be a double edged sword...programs may look at a seasoned health professional as an intern as a plus....but they may also prefer working with a clean slate and would worry that the person who has already attained attending level would find the adjustment to becoming a trainee again a bit difficult...they may look at a newly graduated student as some one thwey can train their way...
