Does age matter in getting a residency spot?

    Advertisements

    Hi there,

I am thinking to start my medical studies and I will be around 36 years old by the time I am ready to apply for any residency spot. Does anyone know if older applicants are disadvantaged when competing against younger applicant? after all the you younger candidate will have a longer time to practise medicine and therefore may be slightly favoured.

Any feedback on that is greatly appreciated.

    R-

    age

let's put it this way: if a chair or PD has an issue with it it can affect you. However generally it won't.

    age (discrimination).

Just an addendum here. Age discrimination is regulated at federal level in the United States and since residents are pretty much cheap labor for a program the program is not overly concerned about where the residents will be 5 years down the road.. It's not like the program is investing in residents for any future gain..

However, age COULD become a liability if your age would make you appear to have lower threshold for high-energy activity or demanding call schedules.

I doubt there are many 40+'ers that are willing to enter a Neurosurgery path and neither do I think PD's would be too optimistic about their prospects.

But, as I said, age discrimination, even if hard toprove, is something a residency program does not want to be associated with..

    immigration status

    Hi Jim,

To help me better estimate an older IMG's chances at a residency in the States, would you please let me know whether you've had a green card or U.S. citizenship when you've got your number one choice ?

How about your classmate in his 60's ?

    Thank you !

    Hi Steph,

Have you seen or heard of non-US citizen IMGs in their 40s at your or other programs ?

    Thank you !

    ok, thats harder

I and all my friends were US born, so i dont know if its hard for an older person with visa issues or not. I know for the most part, just having visa issues makes it harder.
