which carribean school has the highest step 1 average?

Does anyone know this? I would think it is between SGU and Ross but is the difference marginal?

    Thanks!

just some interesting points to make here...

the US med student pass rate hovers around 90-93% for step 1 first time takers, for IMGs it's around 66%. but what some don't know is that for US-IMGs (a good number of caribbean students), the number was 52% last time i checked. dismal number, yes?

so the standard bell shaped curve for the mean/median/mode is somewhere around 190/78 on step 1 (US-IMGs). the vast majority of people posting on this forum are the ones who score well, and like to talk about it. there are many, many more who fail and are ashamed to post here, or don't know about valuemd.

i think those who frequent this forum score higher. these are the people who are diligently trying to find out what they need to do to prepare based on successful people's experiences. i know i scored better because i knew from the very beginning it was going to be a long, challenging journey, and i started preparing very early. but i wouldn't have known this if it wasn't for this forum. i probably wouldn't have even known about caribbean med schools at all, and i probably would be somewhere else in my life right now, having nothing to do with medicine. but here i am, with all my exams passed, sitting on 3 interviews for residency positions, and waiting for more. so here's to valuemd [lifting cup for a toast]!

one thing i like to say... i don't know which school has what pass rate, all i know is my USMLE pass rate, 100%.

Perhaps because those accepted to SGU apparently have developed strong study habits ie;discipline, their solid study continues during school and helps them do well on usmle.

I believe if a student at ANY school starts to review usmle questions from day one they too can do well. i recall those who studied for boards like there was no tomorrow, while at uce, 20 years ago (they hated uce and were determined to transfer to a US school) did well and many did indeed transfer to the US.
keep in mind these were largely students rejected from US schools already. Therefore, if you apply yourself anything is possible

Considering that the time you take to study for step1 probably has an impact, some people who take step 1 right after they finish clinical sciences probably have a slightly lower score than those who take 6-8 weks to review.

In many ways the Steps are exactly like the MCAT, insomuch that they represent a means to an end (i.e. med school or residency interviews) and become meaningless after the fact.

So, if your goal is to simply score a decent residency spot, then passing with an average score (218 step 1) is all that is necessary. For those who want competitive spots, higher scores will help but once you get the interview your scores matter as much your MCAT score....nothing.

    interesting Q

Well, best bet is to contact ECFMG, and inquire......my experience with offshore, especially caribbean medical schools is that all state "90% passing rate or >200 on first attempt..." BUT, Don't think it is that objective.......
A quick look will show you that only 68% of first time IMGs takers do pass step 1...and that is year dependent.....
    http://www.ecfmg.org/cert/factcard.pdf

    Step 2CK: 77%

    Step 2CS: 84%

So, I don't really think that 90% claims are valid.......

I wonder if there is a publication that state individual schools......?!?!?

SGU also has higher admittance standards. Stronger students may tend to score higher.

    school's avg

In addition to checking out schools.....my advice for board scores, would be to take the KAPLAN live lecture, read the Qbooks, and practice at least 1000Qs.....for me it was plenty to score over 200....

Step 2ck was REALLY easy compared to step 1, and for step 2cs, I barely studied as we did plenty of OSCE type cases at the UHSA campus.....

    Regards,

I agree, and Caribbean schools certainly aren't the 'best' international medical schools to attend.

    Carib Med

    I disagree......
Actually some Carib schools are better investments than other international schools.....I would take Carib med over Bagdad U anytime any day.......not to mention, they better prep you for boards... AND rotations are in the US /ACGME......the best of both worlds......US Experience and English teaching programs....
