4 year versus 6 year programs

    Advertisements

If you go to a four year medical school in Poland or Prague are you certified to work in Europe as well as the US. If I do a six year program will I be able to work in western Europe and in the US. I am privy to Poland because I am fluent in Polish and all of my family lives there, but Prague is a beautiful city also.

don't know the answer, but i do know that there are no 4 year programs in prague.

i have heard rumors/rumblings on this site that the 4 year degree is not well recieved in europe. i think miklos knows more about this. but, if you want to work/live in europe, i would bet that it would be better to attend the 6 year european model programs. it would suck to finish a 4 year program, and not have it work out. the extra 2 years really are nothing in the grand scheme of things, especially if taking a short cut turns out to not be accepted.

    best of luck!

    Europe

You must check each country individually since EU does not control medical practice requirements at the local level. Last I checked( 9 months ago) , England was examining graduates from the 4 year programs on an individual basis while 6 year program graduates were integrated without scrutiny.

Prague is awesome. If you have no ties to the region, I would definitely consider it. If you have family in Poland, you are probably better off going there since they will serve as indispensible support during the first, most grueling years.

    my opinion

    Hi there,
6-year programs are pretty much the standard throughout Europe. The reason why I strongly doubt there would be a 4-year program in Eastern Europe is that there is no such thing as undergraduate education. People go to med school right after high school and to learn everything within 4 years would be little bit too much. Especially with the depth of basic sciences that you're required to learn. Check it out though, because I am born Slovak and studied in Slovakia. Other schools may have somewhat different criteria for foreign students.

i know there are several 4 year programs in poland, and i think varna also has one...so, they DO exist, but they may not be well recognized or usable within the EU. however, every year they send graduates back to the states for residency.

    interesting...

That's interesting. I never heard about a 4-year program, but that's probably because I never met any US student studying medicine in Europe.

I'm in a 4 year program in Poznan, Poland, and so are 53 of my other first year classmates.

There are also 4 year programs in Warsaw, Krakow, Lublin, Katowice, and several others all in Poland.
