    Australian students in Europe

    Advertisements

    Hi,

I am an Australian and am contemplating the idea of studying medicine in Europe. Are there any Aussies out there? How has you're experience been? Do you think your chances of coming back home are good?

    I would appreciate your replies!

    thank you!

    Hi there.

I'm looking at doing the same thing. I'm looking at Poland or Ukraine. Wont be a \n easy road coming back to Oz and securing a job, but not impossible

Hi, thanks for your reply I'm looking at Poland and the Czech republic right now.. the schools are not bad and seem to have a solid international reputation. However getting an internship in Oz immediately after graduation may be difficult but I don't mind practicing elsewhere to establish myself first. I've spoken to others there and have been told that like medical schools around the world, medical schools in the EU also require work. I'm still doing my research on them though

    hi

I am a New Zealander and planning to study med in Poland. But I have little info so I'm just doing some research at the moment. Did you already apply for med in Europe? I would like to hear your experience if possible.

    thanks

Hi, you will need to sit the AMC exams (1.theory and 2.prac) post-medical degree (provided the degree is from an IMED registered uni - ie check internet IMED register). You could try for an internship in Oz after sitting AMC 1 With a bare degree, but prospects of an internship are not that good even if you are an Oz or NZ citizen. Better off doing internship in country you do the degree then going through AMC process as a regd doc and then trying to get a JHO position at an Oz hospital. Check it all with AHPRA so you understand the details of the laws governing returning to practice in Oz before embarking on the journey. Definitely possible, but a few extra hurdles. Worth the adventure and diversity in my view. Cheers.

    Hi,

I also recommend you research the Oceania University of Medicine. If you are self-starting, persistent and can learn well without supervision, a medical career is possible through this pathway. There are probably around 15-20 doctors practicing in Oz who have taken this journey. The reality is that, whilst the med sciences are extremely important, you can study using internet resources, and you actually learn to be a doctor in the clinical phases of your degree and internship. The OUM path won’t work for you if you expect to be spoon-fed like some starting out at med school. As a med education journey, it presents an easy entry and difficult exit. Mainstream med schools in Oz operate the other way around - difficult to get into, but entry to practice is basically set up for you once in. You may hear and read all sort of opinions about internet study and criticism of the medical education offered at OUM and at other overseas unis. The reality is that these pathways are out there, are made possible by the AMC and AHPRA, and a number of people have made it work for them and have become very good doctors. They have been successful as GPs and in other specialities in Australia and elsewhere. The AMC exams are thorough and seem to filter the IMG entrants reasonably from a knowledge and skills perspective (with a few notable exceptions). Research wisely and learn all the challenges of the alternative pathways you are contemplating. Good luck.

    Cheers.
