    Semmelweis vs Charles

    Advertisements

I have just been admitted to Charles University in Prague. I might also get in Semmelweis in the upcoming month. Which should I go for ? I have heard Budapest is a better city for students as Prague is always crowded and touristy. And also Semmelweis has a better rank in the Medicine. But Semmelweis has oral exams which I don't have any experience with. Seriously, which should i go for ?

    Hello Shivang26,

I have been admitted to Semmelweis University. Budapest is a very nice city but I don't know anyone who studies at Semmelweis who actually has the time to enjoy the city to the fullest. Most of them are stressed the whole time. A lot of pressure and those oral exams can be quite intense. So start working on getting some hard skin in order to survive if you go there.

I know very little about Charles University but the city is impossible in the summer time. Way too many people.

Semmelweis ranks higher but the tuition fees are also way higher. Is it worth it? No idea.

I was accepted in Gdansk as well and at this point I am very keen to accept my place there rather than at Semmelweis (40.000€ difference in study fees is something I MUST consider).

Good luck with your decision. No matter where you end up, don't look behind.

    Hello!

I'm not currently studying at Semmelweis, but I have a place as I applied for deferred entry starting Sep 2017
I have multiple contacts at the university, and this summer I visited Budapest, so I should think I'm quite a reliable source hahaha.

I was in the same position as you, I was admitted to both Charles University and Semmelweis University. My boyfriend is from Prague, and he has lived there his whole life. He agrees that Charles University is internationally renown for its degrees, and that it invites a lot of students. However the reality with Charles University is that graduates do not have good employment records. I am not speaking from a biased POV, just telling you what my opinion is. Semmelweis University has good relations with multiple universities and hospitals around the globe, so summer practice/clinical rotations are flexible, and much more international than Charles University.

When studying, I think that the city you study in and the environment you are in is extremely important. This is why I travelled to both Prague and Budapest in the summer.

Prague is an extremely beautiful city, much bigger than Budapest. Despite being beautiful, Prague is an extremely popular tourist location, and the cost of living is very high compared to Budapest. At nighttime, Prague is impossible. There are drunks everywhere, even in the affluent/tourist areas. Some drunks tried to approach me (thanks to my boyfriend who was with me at that time!). The back streets are dangerous, and men with knives or broken beer bottles is normal. There are no policemen. In Budapest, I ventured out when the sun set, as I felt really safe. In Prague, I went straight back to my hotel as soon as the sun started setting. I felt constantly in danger.

Budapest is equally beautiful, with the Danube running through. The city is extremely small, and everything is within walking distance. People in Budapest seem cold (resting man's best friend face) but once you talk to them (say hi in Hungarian!) they warm up quickly. The outskirts of Budapest are run-down and derelict. The buildings are run-down and very old. These outskirts are the most dangerous parts in Budapest - but even then they are still much safer than downtown Prague. There are a lot of prostitutes, and beggars in the outskirts. I accidentally ventured into one area, and ran into a prostitute with an escort. I was scared, as the area looked completely different to the middle of the city, and I was completely lost. The prostitute and her escort offered to tell me the way back into the main city area - by using their Google maps! Hilarious. There are the occasional druggies, but they're mostly just completely knocked out from overdosing. Budapest by night is beautiful. If you venture onto the main roads by the Danube, you can see the Citadel lit up and Buda castle, as well as the Parliament building. There are police officers constantly patrolling the city by night. I walked up to the Citadel, and on the way down I took a wrong turn and went completely into the forest. This resulted in me taking a horrible path all the way down from the Citadel Hill (highest vantage point in Budapest) in complete darkness. I saw someone appear in front of me and I was so scared I nearly wet my pants - but it was a police officer. She offered to take me down safely.

As a student of 18, female, asian, quite weak, and with absolutely no sense of direction (as you can tell) I felt much more vulnerable in Prague. It has a high crime rate, and the mobs that are in the city centre are threatening. This was in the daytime as well. In Budapest, there are many more police around. I don't know if this is because of the mobs, but I felt extremely safe in Budapest in the daytime.
When I went to buy a ticket for the underground tram, I was approached by some homeless people, and they asked me for money. I learnt how to deal with this from my contacts at Semmelweis - completely ignore them. I ignored them and went on my way - unscathed! Haha they had no weapons, just a bit dirty and unkempt. After I finished my transaction for the ticket, I was approached by some ticket inspectors which asked in broken English whether I was ok. I said I was fine, and they proceeded to call the police, which came in about 2 minutes. The police asked me whether I was ok, and offered me some Hungarian sweets. I gladly accepted (Hungarian food is AMAZING). The beggars were arrested and taken away. Amazing experience!

Of course, if you are a male student you do not need to worry about these problems. But just in case

Budapest is small, Prague is large. Ruin bars in Budapest were amazing, Prague bars were worse comparatively. Sziget festival in Budapest was so fun, and Margit Island was amazing too. This post probably sounds quite biased as I loved Budapest so much more over Prague. Prague is also an amazing city, it's just that I would not choose to live there as it is less safe, more expensive to live, and really crowded. Budapest was still crowded at Sziget, as it is one of the biggest events held in Budapest. However the amount of people in Budapest at the time of Sziget was equal to the amount of people just in Prague - yes, Prague is too crowded for me ><

Now onto the universities. Charles University is much more laid back (even though it's more intense than most universities) than Semmelweis. Semmelweis is extremely difficult, and if you do not have the motivation to become the best doctor, you will not make it through 1st and 2nd year. Charles University makes a doctor. Semmelweis University makes the best doctors. Proof is in the pre-clinical programmes. 1st and 2nd year at Semmelweis is basically so tough, 4 years of human anatomy, chemistry, physics major all squished into two years makes it difficult. The amount of detail in the anatomy is ridiculous, as most of it you will not need in the process of training to be a doctor. However, people who are truly interested in the human body, and curing people will willingly go into so much more detail to become a better doctor.

Semmelweis University exams are hard. Exam period is basically every week, no rests! Mainly oral exams for anatomy. Professors will try to make the first two years of university impossible for you. However after the first two years, 3456, they will respect you and try to train you to be the best doctor that you can be. They will make you extend beyond your comfort zones.
Charles University professors are less enthusiastic. Exam period is still really difficult, but there are periods of rest in between.

Some people say that Semmelweis students have much less time for enjoying the city. This is untrue. Yes, it is always exam period. Yes, it is more intense than Charles University. But in the end it all comes down to your own planning. If you plan well, then you will have more than enough time to drink, eat out, take a night off.

Hope this cleared up any questions you had!

Hello there! I am looking to applying for both Charles University and Semmelweis University next year and have started preparing myself for both exams. I am really hoping to get any advice in terms of preparing for the exam. I can see that Charles University has recommended some books on their website to help applicants study for their entry exam. But I could not find any academic books or source recommendations from Semmelweis. Could you kindly recommend me any studying materials for Semmelweis perhaps?? It would be more than appreciated! Also, my other question is, which entry examination did you find to be more difficult when you applied for both?? What would your advice be in terms of preparing for both interviews? So sorry for the bother but I am quite anxious and would really appreciate any advice or recommendations! Thank you so much in advance.
