1st vs. 3rd Faculty Charles University in Prague

    Advertisements

    Hello!

First, thanks for any input or response you might have to this query.

I have been accepted to the first and third faculties of medicine at Charles University in Prague and am trying to decide which faculty to attend. I am an American and am in the CR for personal reasons. I eventually would like the option of a USA residency but might just stay in the CR to practice medicine. Here are my thoughts / questions / concerns:

    - First faculty is the 'oldest and most prestigious' and has all 50 state approved for residency. But, I am from the east coast and have no need for Californian approval. However, I cannot find any info on the interwebs about those practicing medicine from the 3rd Faculty in the USA. Any info/insight into that?

    - The 3rd Fac seems to have a more updated curriculum, following what the US has been doing whereas the 1st Fac hasn't changed their curriculum in a long time. This is not to say it doesn't work, of course, but there are differences.

    - What are the age ranges of the students in each faculties?

    - Attrition Rate? Due to age/interest of student or due to purposeful weeding out at each faculty?

    - Any thoughts from 3rd Faculty students? there seem to be more posting about the 1st fac, but not very many from the 3rd.

I have a million more questions, but i'll start with that, i suppose!

    Thanks in advance.

You may have no immediate need for California approval for your practice desires, but with the changes foreseen in the US Match, you may very well have a need for a California residency program! Remember that there are a LOT of programs in California, and FMGs often end up training in areas where they do not plan on practicing in the future. That is the reality of the situation for us as FMGs. That also does not even consider the other states that use the California Medical Boardīs list, to some degree or other, such as Vermont, Indiana, New Mexico, etc. If you are considering returning to the US for specialty training, it would make a ton more sense to keep as many residency options open as possible, because you will probably need to apply as broadly as possible in order to have a chance at matching.

Yes, there are. However, unless 3rd Fac has impending CMB approval (as in, before you start), it is important in this regard to begin with the end in mind. I do not think that there are very many E-EU medical schools that do a fantastic job on their own of preparing people for the USMLEs. That is something students get to undertake on their own, because they bloody well have to.

No idea on those three, sorry. We can leave them to someone who is on-site. I was in another part of E-EU for med school.

Good luck, wherever you end up!

Thanks so much for your thoughts, I really appreciate it.

I understand (and largely agree) with what you're saying about CA and the 8+ states that follow their guidelines: limiting myself even further after a foreign medical degree is not advised. However, given my good MCAT scores and presumably I, myself, will prepare for the USMLEs - which are also going through a major restructuring - I guess i was hoping i'd have a chance in the other 42 states, especially if I am doing a not (as) competitive residency (family, IM)? And, you are again correct that no schools in E-EU seem to prepare for the board exams but hopefully my self motivation continues.

Well, food for thought for me. Thank you very much!

My main concern, if I were entering medical school now, would be that the AAMC and ACGME have stated (and published) a goal of a 1-to-1 ratio of US medical grads to US internship positions by 2016. While I do not personally think that they will be able to accomplish such a goal by 2016, every bit of progress that they make in that direction will make things harder on FMGs.

Indeed, the closer they get to that published goal, the more likely it is that almost all FMGs could be scrapping amongst themselves for FM, IM, PED, PSY positions. And I am talking about the people with excellent USMLE scores who might have shot for ROADS residencies in the past... the people who struggle a bit but might have matched in primary care in the past could well be looking for other options, or just not matching.

Again, nobody knows exactly how this will play out. We have to read the articles and publications, look at the numbers, and make our own readings of the tea leaves. Regardless, it is for the reasons above that I think 50 state approval matters, no matter where you want to work after residency.

You are right that MCAT scores have been linked to future USMLE success, and I wish you all the best no matter where you study. It is a long slog, but try to enjoy it as much as you can!

    Hello,

I'm in a similar situation like you - I got accepted into the 1st and 3rd faculties and I'm canadian - so I was wondering which faculty you ended up choosing?
I'm almost set on the 3rd one but the CA approval list keeps making me go back to the 1st one.
    Thanks for your reply!!
