    German Medical Residencies

    Advertisements

    Hi everyone,

I am going to med school in the U.S. and am interested in a residency in Germany.

Does anyone know how many residency positions are available this year in Germany? Are they in need of residents from abroad?

Also, does anyone know the name of a recruiting company?

    Thank you.
    Alex

Yes, Germany is actively looking for physicians. The number is not readily available, because the Germans do not have a match system like the US uses, and the number is in flux. Training programs in Germany hire physicians as Assistenzärzte year-round. Programs in the eastern part of the country seem to have more openings, but they are sometimes in less desirable areas of Germany, and some of the hospitals there are not great. (Others are excellent, which is why it pays to look around and work with a good recruiter.) Competition can be quite stiff for applicants to the world-class programs like Charité-Berlin, Heidelberg, Hamburg, etc., but foreigners do get positions there. I work with a Greek doctor who did a year at Heidelberg before coming to Switzerland.

The main issue is that you need to speak German to at least the B2 level (tested, i.e. Goethe Institute). C1 is better, and some hospitals are requiring C1 now (a guy I graduated with this year ran into that -- he was at B2, and they said they liked him and would hire him as soon as he got to C1). That is also specialty dependent. Obviously, psychiatry will require near fluency, as do some other specialties.

You also need to make sure that your medical degree will be accepted by the German government. Of course, an EU diploma is automatically accepted, but I am pretty sure that a US diploma will be approved as well.

Those questions can be answered by a good German medical recruiting company. (There are a lot of crappy ones out there, make sure you deal with a professional group.) I do not recommend contacting them unless/until you are at B2-level German or higher.

Oh, and it also helps to have either EU citizenship, or citizenship from a country that is not viewed with suspicion by the German immigration authorities. Assuming you are a US citizen, you should be all right in that regard, based on my conversations with some German recruiters.

The, um, post directly above yours is a fair place to start with the basics.
