Sofia Medical University, School of Dental Medicine?

    Advertisements

    Hi everyone,

I would like to hear from current students at SMU, School of Dental Medicine about their experiences with the program. Specially about the 5th year of the program. Is it useful? Are the instructors attentive? Their level of English proficiency?

Are you satisfied with the amount of the practice you get? Are there enough patients to carry out and see at least several procedures?
Are the instructors or assistants helpful while you are working on a patient?

I would greatly appreciate if someone could upload the weekly schedule of the 5th year. And about the final tasks like Thesis writing and state exam, if you have any opinions, please share them.

So many questions in one post, and I highly appreciate your answers!

    Thank you in advance

I have no specific knowledge about the dental school at MU-S -- note that the "Sofia" comes at the end of the name, not at the beginning -- but be sure that a foreign dental degree is accepted in the jurisdiction where you wish to practice. In many areas (North America jumps immediately to mind) you could end up having to complete several years of additional training in order for foreign dental credentials to be accepted.

Yes, I know about the name of the school, however I think the correct name would be "University of Sofia, School of Dental Medicine"...Seems that foreign students give the name "Medical University" to all these universities...Anyway, what you mentioned about accreditation is right, but bear in mind that for US dental schools who offer IDP programs (International Dentist Programs), technically every university outside US/Canada is the same... for example from their point of view, a dental degree from Bulgaria is the same as a dental degree from France, therefore no difference.

Nope, it is not a foreign student affectation... I am looking at a scan of my diploma here, and it pretty clearly reads "Medical University - Sofia." OK, to be accurate it reads "Медицински Университет - София," but the point is the official university name. You can check that with the (crappy) university website if you like: МЕДИЦИНСКИ УНИВЕ*СИТЕТ София | Sofia

That may seem like splitting hairs, but I mention it because "Sofia University" is completely different institution within the same city. That is why it matters.
The overarching institution is the MU-S, and there are several different faculties within that larger medical university structure. The Faculty of Medicine, for example. The Faculty of Dental Medicine. The Faculty of Public Health. Et cetera.

Yeah, no difference between foreign dental programs, per se... the main thing is that one is not expecting direct and automatic approval for the degree. Far too many people make assumptions like that, and it is good that you are doing your homework in advance. Good luck to you!

Well, OK then, in case of MU-S it is called what it is named officially. By the way, do you know anyone from the school of Dental Medicine, preferably a 4th or 5th year dental student who can help with my questions? Highly appreciate it!

I do not know any of the dental students, but I do have friends there who might know some. I will be there next week for a research meeting, let me ask around and get back to you. Shoot me a PM next week to remind me, OK?
