    Riga Stradins Medical School

    Advertisements

    Hi guys,
I would like to apply for medical application process in Riga Stradins Univ.
But i do not know if my application is competitive!
For ex: i got the maximum evaluation in high secondary school! ( with honours)
But i did not completed my bachelor in Biology ( sat only 12 examx, on above 24) simply because i do not like biology. It is too technical for me.

My english is very good but i have not a certification.
Well to be honest i have cambridge certification but passed with grade C and they require grade B, otherwise they will look at your school report ( where i have the maximum in English)

I schould insert also 2 recommendation letters, but writing them is not usual in italy where i live and some teachers told me: no, i can't write a letter!

I was thinking of applying next year ( maybe to improve my curriculum)
But there is the possibility to apply this November!!!

    Should i risk? Or not?
If i fail, i have to re-prepare all the documents again for the following session!!

    Please, give me advice!
    Thank you very much

You "do not like biology?" In what, exactly, do you suppose that the study and practice of medicine is based?

Medical school is a pantload of biology and biologically-based coursework. General Biology. Microbiology. Biochemistry. Histology. Gross Anatomy. Physiology. Pathophysiology. Pathology. Et cetera. If you don't like (or, at the very least, cannot complete a course in) biology, I honestly cannot see how you will get through medical school at Riga or anywhere else. That is not intended to be harsh, it is just a simple statement of fact.

My course of study is called general biology and we study bio-informatics, Dna recombinant, vectors, plasmids, leaves, plants.
I do not like this stuff.

I like human biology, histology and things like these.

    and...i prefer studying the mind.

this is what I like. So, i do not know if i have to risk or not in applying to Riga.
For ex: i do not know if they require volunteer work. and extra-activities.
and i do not know if who has done them is more competitive than me.

In italy the situation is different. You do a test the same day in all the regions of the nation. And you choose 3 cities. There is a list and you pass if your name is in this list.
If someone renounces, you can be fish out!

They do NOT consider high school valuation, extra activities and your attitude.
Do u know why? Because medicine is italy means studying books by heart.
so...if you have volunteered or gone to Africa is not important.
but if you passed the admission test, they say: you can study well and you can study BIG books.

I know that in europe is different, for example: we usually study books with loud voice
whereas in uk or germany students read and do notes. ( no loud voice like a parrot)
    We have a different mentality.

For curiosity, i went to histology class for med students even though i was not supposed to go because i am a biology student.
And the prof said: i wrote a book, it costs 300 euros and if u want to pass the exam you have to study on it! So...where is the science?? We are not parrots!!!

and i want to go abroad, in a more suggestive univ!

    Well you are not harsh.

    I reflected a lot!

    No maths
    No calculus
because i cannot think and solve!! this is my limit!

Maybe philosophy because i like speculate, but if you study phylosophy in italy, you can become a short term worker if you are lucky!

Maybe english literature, i like it a lot! i like interpret poems and pamphets!

And i am a victim of my family, because they say: you are attending the 4th year of biology, you cannot give up!
I was supposed to study only 3 years but...i am a university student who has failed to complete his course within the prescribed time.

Profs do not examine every day like at school...so i am depressed and bored!

This is the third answer to your post, sorry.

I like medicine too because i imagine myself helping sad and sick people.
    This is rewarding!

I think that I do understand what you are saying, to some degree. There is a difference between human biology and other biological disciplines. And I also understand the interest in philosophy and other ancillary subjects -- I feel the same way about them.

Remember that there is a lot of calculation (dosing, etc.) involved in medicine, so you will not escape that kind of thing in medical school. Even if you went into psychiatry, which could be a nice match with some of your stated interests, you still need to do that sort of thing. Remember also that medical school is a very rigorous course of study. The schools may have many questions about why you did not complete your degree, and also have concerns about whether or not you will finish the medical curriculum.

(One tip: If they ask, do NOT tell them that the reason you did not finish is because you do not like biology! You will be dead in the water.)

Good luck. Sorry, I have no information about Riga specifically. I haven't visited Latvia yet, but I have heard it is a beautiful place.
