Italian Med School & PLUS Loan

    Advertisements

    Hi Everyone,

I'm in the process of going to medical school in Italy. One major problem that stands in my way is my undergrad PLUS loan. Generally, you are automatically entitled to a deferment on payments upon entering med school. However, that only applies to school registered with the Department of Education (in other words, US schools).

IF the Italian school is affiliated to a U.S. School (i.e. does exchange programs, summers abroad etc.) then I may be eligible.

If anybody knows of Italian Med schools that have such a rapport with U.S. schools I would really appreciate it. I can't afford to keep up current loan payments and live in Italy.

You can also try to get the Italian school verified by the US Department of Education, through the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation... which should take care of the problem. It is also part of the process to make a foreign school eligible for American students to get federal financial aid while studying there, which is a nice perk. This is not overly complicated on its surface, but it can be a pain in the rear to implement (I'm attempting to get it done in Bulgaria right now).

My understanding of the "rapport with US schools" deal is that you have to be enrolled in a degree program at the US school while studying overseas at the foreign school... which you aren't, if you're in medical school.

@chocolate = No medical school in Western Europe (UK excepted) teaches in English.
