I'm a british student at zagreb medical school. If you have any questions about the english medical program, pm me or post here n i'll try to answer them as best i can!

From the pms i've received i should add that most basic questions can be answered on the Zagreb medical school website:

In the cases where that doesn't help, I'm here. But note i'm not omniscient, you mite have 2 tell me about urself, so that I help u. Kinda depends on the question u ask eg. prerequisites depend on where ur from.

Also apply directly to the school. Never use agents. They offer no advantage and cost alot of money.

Pros and Cons of the Medical Studies in English program at the University of Zagreb:

Pros:

#Smaller Classes (average about 20 people subscribing to a course) This equals more face time with the lecturer. For me this was an important factor in coming here. Some East European Schools have over 100 students on a course.

# Max intake for a single year = 50 students. 30 Students have enrolled so far onto the program for next year. This is surprising as that 50 quota is never filled, and most applications are sent during the summer (like i did)!

#Zagreb is a reputable/respectable university and croatia is a very beautiful country.

# The University is recognised throughout the world, as is the degree. This includes the UK, Canada and US.

# Last year Zagreb fees were one of the cheapest in Eastern Europe. Don't know if thats true today but they're still 7000 euros.

#They offer a 6, 5 and 4 year program. 6 years r 4 ppl straight from high school. 5 years is for students who have a degree from somewhere else or did one year pre med. (See cons for the 4 year program).

# Graduate with an MD degree.

# Cheap accommodation in the city btwn 200-400 euros for a flat.

# Course is less intensive than 4 year courses elsewhere (there are more breaks).

# USMLE centre in the city. Come in handy for those who want to return to the United States. Not affliated with the Uni and I dont much about it.

# Zagreb is a v. safe city.

#THE COAST... pula, rovinje, pliviska, split, dubrovnic....drool

Cons

# Students can ONLY enter the 4 yr program if they have completed 2 pre med years elsewhere. This means students with Biology based degrees would b accepted onto a 5 year program and NOT the 4 year program, unlike in the Uk or other european unis.

Basically the 6/5/4 year program is the same. The difference comes downs down to where people enter the program and this depends on their academic history.

# No longer able to get discounted food and there is talk of having to pay for a travel pass next year 2011-2012

# No student dorms 4 us (really not an issue, better accommodation is readily available)

# Zagreb sucks in comparison 2 the rest of croatia i.e. the coast (the coast is awe-some) but the city is ideally located. So you can reach most places. And epic Slovenia is just 2hrs away.

# Program is new (i think it began in 2003), so some teething problems. Access the website, and look at the schedules to work out any clashes. Because no one else will do it for you. (They have a clerical staff of 2 for the english program).

# Courses are hit and miss, most are taught well bt some aren't. Same anywhere. The main thing is you are given the tools needed to become a good doctor.

# Food is more expensive than say poland. (About UK prices) Croatians are proud of their produce so its all home grown and pretty good. There are student discounted cafeterias around the city for croatian residents so befriend a couple and borrow their cards Expect prison like food in some!

# They're anal about attendence, its like high school all over again.

# Have to learn croatian obviously. I suck at it, though its phonetically spelt words so its nowhere as bad as polish or hungarian.

# Nite life is limited as zagreb is a small city, but budapest isn't that far away...

# Generally if you study anywhere in the EU then u r exempt from taking licence exams in your native EU country e.g. British students studying in Poland do not have to take PLAB once they return to be able to practise.

Croatia is not in the EU so the MD degree from here does not exempt british students. This applies for applicants from other EU countries as well. Though there is a loop here to this, students of non British but EU nationality (e.g. french) who study here can apply to work in the UK without taking the PLAB

I'm from the UK so why did I chose to ignore this?

1. Croatia is expected to join the EU by the time I graduate. I am taking a gamble- anything can happen before then. Expected to join in summer 2013

2. In that same respect, guidelines change all the time. So while a degree from EU member Poland may exempt u from exams back home 2day it might not 2mrw. Germany for example now wants graduates from poland to take exams for medicine, where once it didn't.

3. PLAB, USLME ETC are a major hassle and are expensive, but at the end of the day if your good, they'll confirm that.

You say that students with a Biology degree are NOT placed into the 4-year track? I don't know about British undergrad institutions, but at my university, a Biology degree consist of a year of physics, general chemistryy, organic chemistry, and obviously a hefty helping of biology. If this doesn't prepare one for the 4-year program, what does? A PhD??

Its just the way they do it here. Zagreb only lets those with completed pre meds onto the 4 year program. There are plenty of other european universities that will accept you onto their 4 year programs with a bio degree. See polish, &Uk institutions 4 details.

Medicine as a course is divided into its pre-med years and medical years. Basically if you studied medicine completed your pre-meds then your eligible for 4 years.

Like I said they are considered. At other unis in europe you'll be enter their 4 year program no problem. At Zagreb they'll take it into account and you'll be put on the 5 year program. However 4 years is reserved 4 transferring medical students.

I see. So you are saying the 4-year program is for other students that were in 6-year medicine programs elsewhere, and transferred.
