6 year med program in Manipal

    Advertisements

Hi I just got accepted to University of Antigua... I am debating over whether to join University of Michigan or go to either Antigua or the manipal campus. I heard that Antigue is only 2 years 8 months because they have trimesters and so i am strongly considering it. My biggest concern is whether or not after the USMLE step 1 I would have to wait for 6 to 12 months. I really dont want to do Internal/family medicine and I am more interested in being a neurologist or a surgeon. I was wondering what my prospects of getting those types of residencies if I go through Antigua since those residencies are highly competitive. I was also wondering if I could test out of some of the courses in pre-med especially Pre-Calc, calculus and General Chemistry 1 and 2. I went to a school with IB curriculum which is a highly competitive curriculum in US. Can someone who went from high school to the 6-year med program explain to me what I should expect when I come there? I would really love to know how many people who applied for residencies actually got into the highly competitive areas like surgery. One of the reasons I want this 6 -year med program is because I really dont want to do it the conventional way and also waste 2 extra years.
Can someone also tell me some reasons why manipal campus might be better than antigua considering you can finish earlier in antigua?
I know it is long but I would really appreciate somebody enlightening me because I am facing a tough decision to decide my future.

You pretty much just answered your own question. The notion of wasting time and the "waste 2 years" is a fallacy. With the residencies you seek, its not even a question.

If you showed some interest in primary care, I would have told you to consider AUA/KMCIC, but with your interests, do well in undergrad/MCAT and go to a decent US school if you can.
