How to better position yourself as a Foreign Medical Graduate - Any thoughts ???

    Advertisements

I had an interesting weekend at a family gathering, had a great discussion with my cousins, family, and friends who were .....

    1) KMC graduates, applying for residency
    2) UMDNJ students
    3) Other Indian medical colleges, applying for residency
    4) IMG's in residency programs - NY, NJ

Here is my understanding from the discussion
    1) IMG's are second to domestic students (understandable)
    2) IMG's have limited opportunities, unless one differentiates from the crowd
    3) KMC has a good reputation (from residency students)
    4) IMG's are limited to a few residency programs (stereotype, but true)

Got me thinking ....... What should I do better if I go down this path ?
    1) Obvious stuff - good GPA, good scores
    2) Research - I guess there are no opportunities in KMCIC
    3) Volunteering - I would love to do it, but how could in in KMCIC?
    Any other suggestions ?

I thought I would wait and see what others wanted to contribute to this. But since no one else is interested, I'll give my two cents:

AUA students who begin in Manipal (KMCIC) are certainly going to be behind any USMG...just like any USIMG.

When I was in Manipal the Dean mentioned that occasionally students can participate in their professors' research projects. I'm not sure how often this happens or how much time students can devote to this. But KMCIC does have some research opportunities. If research is a priority I think waiting until you return to the US would be a better option. The two examples of AUA students I know of who are planning on research to improve their odds of matching in a competitive residency are both 1) extending their tenure both as medical students (finding some good away electives) and 2) have gained research positions which they will complete prior to entering the match. What this means is they will add at least 1 if not 2 or more years to their medical education in this effort to become more competitive.

The main avenue for volunteering in Manipal woulc be through MSAID - Medical Students Aiding in India's Development. Basically fund rasing to support local charities in the surrounding communities. I will be meeting a KMCIC student out in Vancouver on Nov 13 for our Info Seminar. She was one of the KMCIC Student Government Assoc officers. I'll pick her brains and report back.

BTW - No one is going to be able to give you a definitive answer as to how you can maximize your potential other than of course rocking USMLE 1-3 and impressing your clinical preceptors. I suggest maybe contacting a few Program Directors to see if they can give you 15 minutes in their office to ask specifically how they rank different aspects of applicants for residency in their hospitals.

    Tipton,

Any word from the student that you were expecting to meet with in Vancouver ? I plan on applying for the twinning program in the next month or two. Currently gathering information.

No real new info. MSAID is the main volunteer organization for KMCIC students. She was one of the student gov't officers and really enjoyed the level of involvement she had while in Manipal.
