    High School Preparation for UJ?

    Advertisements

Hello, new here on this forum
I'm now entering my senior year of high school, so of course I am beginning to apply to colleges, scholarships, etc. I am determined to study medicine, especially with my father and sister being transplant patients, and my sister currently being on hemodialysis- I've always had an interest for medical issues. There are wonderful medical programs in my area- Hopkins being one. Obviously my family and I could never afford to send me to Hopkins for either undergrad or graduate. Being 100% Polish and knowing my way around Kraków, the 6-year medical program at UJ is a really attractive option for me, both in the cost and the shorter length of the program compared to US schools. I've done quite a bit of research but still have questions, which hopefully somebody could answer for me

-I have a 3.8 GPA, but the last time I took Bio was freshman year and Chem sophomore year. I'm considering taking a community college course this year to refresh/reteach myself in order to prepare for the entrance exam. Would this be a good idea, or would it be enough to simply review from a textbook? What level would you compare the entrance exam level to?

-I graduate high school in the end of May 2011. Admissions for UJ begin Feb 2011, and the entrance exam seems to be scheduled around May as well. How soon after the exam do you receive notice of whether or not you are accepted? I ask this because I'll be applying to several US universities as well, and by the time I apply to UJ, I'll already know if I was accepted into any of the US schools, and will need to choose one.

-How is the 1st year in terms of difficulty? I know to expect a rigorous work schedule, but do they expect advanced prior knowledge of biology and chemistry? (This worries me, since as I've said, I've only taken 1 year of bio, year of chem, and year of physics.) Otherwise, I'm fine with learning brand new material.

-Is it worth living in the dorms, or finding a nearby apartment instead? I have a lot of family in Kraków but I would prefer not to stay with them since it would be incredibly distracting.

-Obviously the process of becoming certified is way different than ours in the US, where you are an undergraduate, take MCATs, apply to Med school and so on. What is the process in the 6-year program at UJ? What exams will I need to take in order to be able to return to the US with a valid MD, apply for residencies and become certified?

I think that's all for now :P Hopefully somebody can help me.
Any other helpful information would be great!

Hey Amanda I am in the 4 year program at Jag so I can't answer all your questions but the last two I may be some help with.

As far as dorms go, there are a bunch of topics on this issue and I'm sure you can find some more opinions with a bit of searching. I lived in the dorms for the first couple months of school this past year as I was looking for my own place and found them to be relatively convenient in terms of location and amenities. However for the amount of pay (1100 zl/month) you can have your own apartment and dont need to share a bathroom and kitchen. Again a bit of searching will produce lengthy conversations about this topic.

As far as licensing and residency goes, the two programs are the same. You will have to write and pass the USMLE board exams if you wish to be considered for residency in the States. USMLE Step 1 is normally completed after the basic science years of medical school (therefore after 2nd year in the 4 year program and typically after 4th year in the 6 year program). Step 2 CK/CS and Step 3 come after but let's not worry about those just yet.

After obtaining a residency you will have to complete all board exams necessary for that specialty.

    Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks Dave! That was really helpful- I'll definitely plan on finding an apartment. I'm very excited about Krakow since I'm so familiar with the city.
One question though- WHERE exactly would you go to take the USMLE if you're going to school in Poland? Does the administration give you at least some form of guidance when it comes to registering/preparing for it?

I guess now all I have left to be concerned about is this entrance exam for the 6-year program. I found sample questions on the school's site so I'll have plenty of time to prepare.
Thanks again And if anyone is enrolled/graduated from the 6-year program, feel free to leave any information!

the exam is offered many times throughout the year at various locations throughout the world, however most students tend to take it in the summer therefore they take it somewhere at home in the USA.

however it is possible to write in locations in Europe such as France and Germany should that prove easier.
