    Dorms in Krakow

    Advertisements

Has anyone stayed in the dorms?

Would you recommend it, and is it harder to focus in the dorms or not? I stayed in a couple of undergraduate dorms at my four year and it was worth it.

    Kind Regards,

    Dr.Livingston

I lived in the dorms from the start of school til about mid-November this year as I was looking for a place. The dorms are alright. The internet is kinda slow but other than that everything is pretty convenient. You get your sheets and towels changed every few days, room is cleaned daily etc etc. There's also a restaurant on the bottom floor.

harder to focus? not necessarily. it all depends on how motivated you are personally i guess. Some people can handle the dorms longer than others, and gradually people find apartments and leave. You pay month to month and you get back a pro-rated amount when you leave.

The major downsides to the dorms IMO are:
    1. if you are the type to cook, there is only 1 shared kitchen on the med student floor so you may find yourself having to wait in line to cook a meal.
    2. no guests allowed after 10pm. i.e your non dorm friends
    3. you need to leave your keys at the reception when you leave, which gets really annoying as you may find out

it is worthwhile to note that for the 1200 zl/month that you pay for a dorm room you can have your own apartment with full kitchen, living space etc.

    hope that helps

Good to know! I am planning on staying at the dorms too!

I still have a few questions for those of you who have stayed in the dorms:
    1. Do they fill up completely
    2. Is it advised to arrive to Krakow early to look at rooms and pick one out?
    3. Do they match you with a room mate?
    4. Are they close to the classes?
    5. Any coffee shops/ places to study and eat around the dorms?
    6. Do 4 year and 6 year students share buildings? rooms??

I noticed that the dorms are pretty far from the old city. Is the dorm far from everything??

I just got accepted into the 6 year program! Looking forward to meeting everyone! : )

    1. Do they fill up completely

Yes, at the start of the year when everyone moves in the dorm is pretty full. At least on the med student floor. The dorm is technically a hotel/hostel, so there will be other guests there too. The med students occupy the top floor however.

    2. Is it advised to arrive to Krakow early to look at rooms and pick one out?

If you want then you can arrive early and scope out a room but it isnt really necessary. They assign a room to you.

    3. Do they match you with a room mate?

Yes, randomly. Unless you have a single room of course.

    4. Are they close to the classes?

Very close. no more than 10 min walk to most classes.

    5. Any coffee shops/ places to study and eat around the dorms?

Tons. Galeria Kazimierz (a mall) is about 5 min away and theres a food court with restaurants, movie theater as well as tons of coffee shops. The Rynek (Old Town Main Square) is no more than 15 min walk. The new student centre that is on Sw. Lazarza has a cafe as well as study spaces, and is also where some of your classes will be held first year.

    6. Do 4 year and 6 year students share buildings? rooms??

    yes to both.

I noticed that the dorms are pretty far from the old city. Is the dorm far from everything??

like i said before, you can get to everything you need to by foot. the dorms may seem like far from the old town on the map but in reality that distance is no more than a 10-15 min walk.

I'm not planning to stay in dorms. You can get your own nice apartment for the same price and not have to deal with roommates, noise, slow internet, etc.

I have a question about the dorms. It says that it's zl1000 for a single and then zl1100/1200 for a double. Do you split the double room price so that it's zl600 per person or does each person in a double room pay zl1200? It's been on my mind for a while so I thought I would ask.

you would think that the cost of a double room is split but unfortunately that is not the case. it is 1200 zl/person.

Im planning on getting an apartment, and am looking into getting a roommate possibly. Ideally, I would be in a two bed room apartment with a roommate, or a three bedroom apartment with two roommates.

I chose to live in an apartment because it provides lots of advantages over the dorms for the same (or sometimes lower) cost. If anyone is interested in a roommate arrangement for an apartment, send me a PM.
