    IUHS and social transformation

Does anyone know from personal experience or otherwise, in their respective state, if medical boards grant a independent license to practice if the pre-clinical sciences were not satisfied in residence? I reside in Tennessee and it's very clear they do not:

0880-02-.04 LICENSURE PROCESS-INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL SCHOOL GRADUATES. To practice medicine in Tennessee a person must possess a lawfully issued license from the board. The procedure for obtaining a license is as follows:
    (1) An applicant shall obtain an application form from the Board Administrative Office, respond truthfully and completely to every question or request for information contained in the form and submit it along with all documentation and fees required by the form and this rule to the Board Administrative Office. It is the intent of this rule that all activities necessary to accomplish the filing of the required documentation be completed prior to filing a licensure application and that all documentation be filed simultaneously.
    (2) It is the applicant’s responsibility to request a graduate transcript from a medical school approved by the American Medical Association or its extant accreditation program for medical education or its successor be submitted directly from the school to the Board Administrative Office. The transcript must show that the degree has been conferred and carry the official seal of the institution.
    (3) To be a Board approved international medical school for purposes of this rule the school shall meet the following curriculum criteria:
    (a) All courses must have been completed by personal attendance. No international medical school accepting or providing credits for courses taken by correspondence shall be approved.
    (b) Course instruction must consist of the equivalent of at least four (4) academic years with a minimum of thirty-two (32) weeks of relevant medical instruction each academic year.
    (c) The school shall be recognized by the World Health Organization but such recognition is not binding on the Board.
    (d) The school’s admission standards must meet or exceed those of medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
    (e) Acceptable medical educational courses and activities must have been centrally organized, integrated and controlled into a continuous program which was conducted, monitored and approved by the parent institution.

Either way, I believe IUHS fits my needs. And since I sit on the TN/VA border, there are a number IUHS grads that practice in Virginia. Moreover, I own and operate two mental health practices and have no desire to change professions altogether. The training of a MD program would allow for greater flexibility and understanding of the human organism. On second thought...if I go through all that training, it would be nice to be cleared from the Department of Health to practice independently.

I look forward to any questions, comments or corrective feedback! Thanks in advance for reading and responding...

Actually, I may have been totally wrong in the interpretation of legislature. In fact, I know I was. There have been several individuals that have achieved licensure in TN. But did they lie on their application, apply before the last two revisions of legislature, or possibly a combination of these, or other circumstances, remains unclear. Just my brain thoughts...nothing more or less.

I can't speak about TN personally but the term "correspondence" is not defined. At IUHS, we are not physically in the room with the professors but the lectures are live. They just happen to be on the internet. I suggest that you call IUHS and ask if TN has licensed any of its graduates. GA and FL have and 20 other states. Call the TN licensing board and ask. Good luck

    Hey lawyerdoc2b,

You're absolutely correct! "Correspondence" is somewhat cryptic. I have spoken with IUHS at length and they couldn't track one down. However, I did, but he went to St. Kitts for the first two years.

Thanks for the well wishes...back atcha!

Not only is 'correspondence' cryptic...but it becomes more diffuse and imprecise as the years go by...
