    U.K. students beware!

    Advertisements

It seems that myself and others were wrong in believing that the GMC was going to leave the issue of distance-learning alone in the wake of the St. Christopher's affair.
They have recently added to their web site here GMC | Acceptable primary medical qualification

In para. 2, as well as defining their opposition to 'squatting', they also mention that the degree must "Have not involved a course of study undertaken wholly or substantially by correspondence."
I know of several people who have contacted them by phone and/or email to clarify this edict. It seems that they are looking for 50% of the course to be done on-island. Their attitude to rotations done mostly in the U.K. is still unclear: perhaps best summarized as "we don't like it but may put up with it".
All distance-learners who want to practise in the U.K. would do well to contact the GMC for guidance.

I think distance learning is best left untouched for anyone. Seems you won't get very far with it. Sure there are anecdotal reports of success, but for the most part, things aren't all that rosy. G

exact wording is interesting on squatting issues

    http://www.gmc-uk.org/doctors/join_the_register/registration/acceptable_primary_medical_qualification.asp

NOTE The UK changed their laws on medical education again.
    "
Not involved a course of study undertaken wholly or substantially outside the country that awarded the primary medical qualification.
Have not involved a course of study undertaken wholly or substantially by correspondence. "

To me this would make the following schools ineligible for licensure in the UK

    what do people think?

Does it mean that caribbean medical schools are not recognised by GMC for PLAB exam just on the ground that we do clinicals in USA not in primary countries.

From what I've heard from the GMC so far it does not seem as if they will require rotations to be done on-island.
However, I cannot stress enough that my opinion is based on what people have been told in phone conversations with various GMC officials. I have not been impressed in the recent past with that body's ability to state clearly and unequivocally as much as its telephone number, never mind something as tricky as this. This is a new policy and anyone who thinks they might be affected should get in touch with the GMC themselves and try to pin them down on specifics.
