    IAU 2017-2018 IMPROVEMENT!!! Love it!!!

    Advertisements

First, Let me just say this, if all the negative was still happening, I would NOT be a STUDENT HERE STiLL!!

But, let me answer a few questions for those who are on the way or applying.

    1. Is IAU Accredited?
The answer is IAU is "ECFMG" accredited, and all students can sit for STEP 1 Exam, complete clinical, and Apply for residency. YES!
However, the government of ST. Lucia has now made it a requirement for ALL medical schools on the island to obtain "CAAM-HP" accreditation, as a new requirement implemented. Therefore, IAU submitted application, like any school would I the world, and awaiting site visit and accreditation. Very confident that that will be just fine.

    2. How are the professors?

My MY MY! AMAZING! The one thing I can say is that over 90% of the professors are well trained, and teach from their hearts. They all know your names. They have open office hours, and will explain any medical concepts in detail, "ONE on ONE" with you... this is RARE to get at an institution in Medicine because usually its too many students. These profs are no joke!!! They teach from the heart and love their students. But they have a goal: Learn, self-discipline, and apply!! You will be a doctor..Remember that!

    3. What else do they have to offer, ya know, the school?

The school does offer tutoring, research opportunities, training in local clinics, oh..we have our own clinic on the campus as well!! Pretty cool. You get to actually work with patients your first semester of medical school here. And the patients are very open to allowing you to train on them. We have a cafeteria, school store, library, lockers, pool room, and the area is pretty safe (its the country side of the island) but always must be alert regardless where you go.

Now, official websites don't lie. If you go on ECFMG you will see the school is accredited. You will also see CAAM-HP has been applied for and is new to out island, so thats in the works. However, some things like there are long class hours (which is currently in progress to be changed to shorter ones) as the institution moves towards a "systems based program" that promotes more self directed learning. The newest dean has made MANY changes: New examination rules (and those who have been dishonest have been expelled), dress code, research programs, ect. socially, everyone knows each other mostly, and are very friendly. Its an inviting place. Oh, the deans will know you by NAME! haha. They are very welcoming.

Anywho, overall I personally think its a great and GROWING institution and thank GOD its not expensive.. yet! Get in while you can! My recommendations for the school is just to shorten the class hours so there is more time to study, increase the bus schedule times to take students home from library.

I mean you are here to study medicine, and graduate to practice! So, its a great choice. Remember, those who do wrong or have done wrong, will always have something negative to say ....no cheating, loud talking in library, bla bla ...just not allowed. so if you come here with integrity, honesty, and respect, and learn, you will become that great physician just like everyone else who graduated! Congrats to those accepted! Work Hard. ITS NO JOKE! Believe me! but WORTH IT!!

I am so glad to hear that. I am glad to see that you are having such a wonderful experience. I had the same as a part of the original class of IAU.

I also would like to point out that the ECFMG issue is completely behind IAU as you can see by going to the world directory of medical schools website.

Anyhow please let me know if you have any questions or anything I can help you with.

    Good Luck!

Being listed in the world directory doesn't mean anything.

ECFMG is not an accrediting body. They do not accredit medical schools. The ECFMG's sole purpose is to certify medical students to sit for the board exams (step 1,2 and 3) and to be licensed in the USA. In 2023 they are implementing a new policy that will not certify any medical student from an unaccredited medical school.

The ECFMG is going to use LCME standards for US trained medical students and WFME (World Federation for Medical Education) standards for internationally trained medical students.

The WFME recognizes 1 accrediting body for the Caribbean and that is CAAM-HP (Carribean Accredidation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions).

IAU is not accredited by CAAM-HP and is not recognized by the WFME and is not approved by the ECFMG. Starting in 2023, students from IAU will not be eligble to sit for the licensing exams.

This issue is going to affect many medical schools in the Carribean that do not have CAAMHP accredidation by 2023, but especially affected IAU this year because of changes that happened in St. Lucia.

St. Lucia, where IAU is located, passed a law this year that adopted the CAAM-HP standards as their own, stating all medical schools in the country must be accredited by CAAM-HP or their students would not be allowed to practice medicine in St. Lucia. This is a small detail that may seem insignificant because likely very few students at IAU want to ever practice in St. Lucia. However, ECFMG certification requires that international medical students must be eligible to practice and be licensed in the country where the school is located.

The adoption of CAAM-HP standards by the government of St. Lucia resulted in IAU students (and students from the other unaccredited schools in St. Lucia) being inelligble to practice in St. Lucia which meant they were no longer eligible to be certified by ECFMG.

The government of St. Lucia has allowed a grace period for the unaccredited schools to attempt to get CAAM-HP accredidation as soon as possible.

It will be interesting to see if IAU is able to get accredited by CAAM-HP, but this is certainly not behind them and it is not going away any time soon.

ECFMG generally opens the door to CAAM-HP accreditation. It's all political you know!

No. In order to be CAAM-HP accredited a school must pass through an incredibly rigorous process. Once they are accredited by CAAM-HP, students from that school will be eligible to apply to be ECFMG certified.

There is no such thing as ECFMG opening the door for CAAM-HP accreditation. That is not how it works at all.

One of the most rigorous rules are set by US in the entire world, so if ECFMG is approved, CAAM-HP will follow, watch. CAAM-HP is a Caribbean accreditation and most Caribbean countries will approve CAAM-HP, since it's within interest of the country. Think of economic reasons and prosperity on a long run. Medicine is incredibly political nowadays. NCFMEA is another story...

I dont think you understand this process at all. There is no such thing as being "ECFMG approved".

CAAM-HP is a unique entity that accredits medical, dental and veterinary schools within the Caribbean. The country where the school is located has nothing to do with that accreditation AT ALL.

It's so nice to see a comment that is fueled with facts and truths.

By the way, IAUCOM IS certified by ECFMG (not accredited by them, which CAAMHP does).

On that note, IAUCOM has been transformed extensively to meet the standards of CAAMHP.
Take a look on the IAUCOM page on ValueMD to see the amazing new deans, curricula and pedagogies.

We submitted an accreditation proposal in 2017, and will be site visited by CAAMHP in March 2018.

CAAMP will decide on IAUCOM accreditation in July 2018 at their annual meeting.

IAU is 100% absolutely NOT certified by ECFMG. To say so is an outright lie.

ECFMG certifies the student, not the school. It is very concerning to me that a school official would not know the difference and would post factually untrue statements publically.

I do with you good luck with CAAM HP though. I know it is a tough process, but if the school is really changed as much as you say then it should be an easy visit.

if you check the CAAM-HP website, IAU has been granted accreditation untill 2020:

"July 2018 Determination: Provisional Accreditation for two (2) years, 2018- 2020

The Authority granted Provisional Accreditation for two (2) years, 2018-2020 and expects to receive annual progress report in 2019 indicating steps taken to address the issues cited in the site visit report and CAAM-HP’s letter".
