    NY Rule Changes

    Advertisements

I saw a NY Times article on another forum where it talks about how NYS is considering a rule change, making it more difficult for existing schools to retain their approval and for new schools to obtain approved status. How is this affecting the IAUís application for NY approval? I see from the discussions on these forums that NY has not acted on the schoolís application in more than a year. It makes me wonder if they have any intention of approving this school. Anybody knows what is going on?

No one knows anything for real. Neither the medical board nor the school has clear answers to when the approval will happen. It is true that the site visit team recommended the school to be approved. It is not confirmed if the delay is due to the proposal to regularize the currently approved 14 schools. Be patient, the ball got to roll one way or the other. It cant be stale mate for much longer.

    My Take On NY

Although unfair, NY could change the rules and try to evaluate the schools with pending applications under the new restrictive rules. It looks like they are moving ahead with rule changes and what those rules may be only time will tell. But if NY adopts the LCME rules for NY approval, many smaller schools will find it cost prohibitive to do the upgrades necessary in order to qualify. Not surprising, the US schools in NY are advocating for LCME-like criteria as a prerequisite to NY approval.

The larger schools with deep pockets may have the necessary resources to upgrade but will do so only if it makes business sense. At the end of day, even the larger schools may abandon NY due to increased cost of doing business. I am not optimistic about NY for these reasons and think that it might be simplistic to think that just because the school was recommended under more generous rules, itís approval is somehow guaranteed. I think the same is true about Spartan's prospect.
