    Basic science at IAU

My philosophy about learning is not to make student fail, but to actually spend more time with them. I heard a lot of caribbean schools out there have a high fail rate in their first two years of basic sciences. Also, the ones that pass probably didn't get a good grasp of the science concept becuz they were busy trying to memorize every detail to pass the course. Therefore screwing up their step scores.
What I want to know about IAU is:

    1) are they in pass/fail system or not
2)what is the percent the student need to score on the course in order to pass it without retaking it
    3) are the courses curved or they go by the standards
    4) what is the quality of the basic science course? like does it prepare u well for the steps
    5) do the school have a high fail rate?
    6) do professors teach with powerpoint presentation, or the students have to read the book on their own
    7) are exams more from the powerpoint, notes, or text book

these questions will help me and other students to have a better grasp on what their courses would be like in their first two years.

    Thanx
    xoxo

wow! - I don't think I could agree with what dr. kidd just said more. Sleeping in med school is NOT an option for me. step 1 prep and obtaining above a 90% on NBME final exams will be my only focus! Speaking from what I've heard not only from IAU students but students who were successful (those who did extremely well on their step 1 scores) from AUC... ALL THEY DID was STUDY! from what their schedule was like... I can only concur... don't go to the program thinking it's easy or you'll have a chance to sleep in class lol.

You should know why? because Dean K, after IAU, was in the faculty of MUA.

IAU is the EASIEST Carib school! Just took the Histology NBME. Friend of mine gave me questions week ago that were directly from the NBME

IAU uses NBME shelf exams and a score of 70% or higher is required to pass the semester. Often the internal exams (also know as mini exams) are of NBME/USMLE standards. If you can consistently do well in the mini exams, there is a high corelation to do well in the final NBME shelfs as well. The mini exams form 30% of your semester grade, while the NBME is the other 70%. In total, you need a minimum of 70% to pass the course. If not you end up repeating the class.
So let's say you took the course, took the NBME and failed it. Is it possible to take the shelf exam again to pass the course, or do we have to take the whole course again?
