Hi.. I am starting at IAU this Summer semester and would like to hear from the January 2009 class ? What are some of the challenges that you guys had to face ? How would you rate the total learning experience ?

    Life on the Island

Hey! I have been on the island for over a month now. School keeps me busy and I am absolutely loving it. Ofcourse I run into little challenges here and there but it's a great learning experience. It rains daily but only lasts for 5-10 minutes. so I would recommend bringing an umbrella if you don't plan on renting a car on the island ( which is extremely cheap becasue you could easily rent a car and share it with couple of other students for less than $80 each per month) or you can take the taxi to school for $1.50 roundtrip a day. Living is cheap compared to the states. you can find a a decent place to live anywhere from $175- $300 a month. Professors are helpful and people are really friendly here especially towards students. People are very low key and it's a very laid back atmosphere. For example: stores close early, banks are closed on weekends, different kinds of food. So long story short I don't think I have run into many challenges but adjustments instead.

    Hi Deepk,
I read your question regarding the professors at IAU and i am happy to say you wont be dissapointed.I am a first semester student here and one of the reasons i love it here so much is because I know I have professors who are not only extremely competent, but are also very dedicated to helping their student become brilliant physicians.I have actually been over to my professor's house to study for biochem exam! It doesnt get any better than that.
One of our Biochem professors, Dr. Gary Steinman, who is also an OB/GYN is an accomplished author and researcher who has made several television interviews on CNN and other networks. So if IAU is your choice be ready to learn!

Hi.. I am a new student at IAU. Adjusting to the island life can be quite challenging at times. Especially the first couple of weeks. I had a hard time adjusting. But you get used to it as time goes by. There is a LOT to study and we have mini-exams every other week. The staff and professors are extremely accomodating. Except for a histology professor, I think the rest of the faculty is top of the line. Our Dean has an outstanding personality. Very knowledgable and motivating. There is a number of eating places close by and living is much cheaper when compared to the US.

Well I can say the materials are plenty, but you have to learn how to manage your time. start reviewing biochemistry and some clinical correlations.( Make sure you bring a majic jack, you can get them it at best buy.) side note. But yeah review all your undergrad. material (histology, embryo, genetics, and cell) and look over diabetics info for clinic, because when you go to clinic the doctor in charge will ask us questions about diabetes , so giving you heads up, he love students who knows their information, and we get a lot of diabetics cases on this Island and hypertension also.
