    J-1 visa or H1-B visa

    Advertisements

Hey people I know this topic has been discussed before but I just wanted to get some up to date info on what non-US citizens and non-permanent residents of the states are doing when it comes to residency time.

I am Canadian and wanted to know if it was better to get the J-1 visa by writing the MCCEE(but involves coming back to Canada for 2 years after residency, not sure how easy it is to get a J-1 waiver - any thoughts??)
OR try to apply for the H1-b visa which can involve waiting a year.

As always, thanks for any input.

    visa's

Welll....the question is if you go for the H1B...what are you waiting for? First...either one, you'll have to find a program of your liking that'll support your visa. I got the J1...no time off...and graduated in May 13...so the timing worked out well. The H1b allows moonlighting...the j1 does not...but essentially you're overworked and limited in pay.... I don't know too many that had all of the extra time to really make some good money with the extra hours. But...the catch is...I think the H1 can be converted into permanent visa status time...and there's no return home policy. The questions kinda moot....because after all of the work...you'll probably just try and grab what you can with the program that supports that.. so if you were to go for the H1b....you'd probably already have a program that's agreed to take you on that....at a future time...so then it might be a good idea. I just didn't want the extra time off...I wanted to keep the training moving along and keep my options open.... there are quite a few more programs that support the J1 I believe.

    ha

Sorry I'm a little tired...I ended up crashing shortly after. But I guess I was just kinda giving some pluses and minuses. My points... H1B...requires more time after graduation to secure, allows you the option of moonlighting, fewer programs support it, and while on the visa you may be able to convert that time to a greencard if desired. J1 points: more programs support it so more residency options, there is a two year manditory return home policy(with three ways I believe to get a waiver), no moonlighting allowed and you don't need to graduate in Dec or earlier to acquire...so you can graduate on schedule and apply for residency the next year. My last other point that I think I was making...is that I didn't have program in mind while going thru the match that supported a H1B.... and I don't think I'd recommend taking the time off after graduation(unless you grad early) to wait for a program that accepts h1b's unless I knew a program had me earmarked. That all...sorry for the confusion.

    True Rico.

But then I would need to get married before I finish med school so that i don't have to wait a year for the H1-B visa. Kinda tough to look for a lady and keep my mind focused on studying at the same time.

But you never know who's out there......

    Green card

Why not get the green card 1st, then go for residency?
I have heard that it takes 2-3 years for the greencard with a good lawyer...
    Anybody did that?
