Timeline between step 3 completion and H1B visa for CMG looking for US fellowship?

    Advertisements

Hi everyone. I am a Canadian medical graduate who has completed residency in Canada last year. I was born in Canada and I have done all my education here, including specialty board certification. I am looking to get a H1B visa for a 2016 fellowship in the USA. I will have all the USMLE steps completed by mid-August 2016. Assuming I receive my step3 score by mid-August, how early can I start working in the USA as a fellow on a H1B visa?

I have several universities interested in offering me a fellowship position, and I realize that I won't be able to start in July like most fellows, but I wanted to have an idea of the timeline. No need to sugarcoat things. Can I get all the paperwork completed, including SSN within 2-3 months of receiving my step3 score? Can I work as a fellow in the USA as early as November?

    Thanks!

There is actually a gap between receiving your visa and getting your SSN. You can start working as of the date on your visa. You can't actually get a pay check until you get your SSN. Your first pay check will be nice as it will be all your backpay from when you started working.
I can give more details if you're still loggin in and checking the forum,

Do you know how long it would take to get the H1b visa after getting your Step 3 results? Do you know anyone who got it done in a short time period?
